Hi Carol & everyone

Just as a parallel kind of thought, I use AVG, normally without any probs.

...But there was one update which caused an issue with Legacy: after downloading the new virus definitions, Legacy would not launch. Life is really not worth living without all my family data on Legacy, so I had a look on the web, and there were a few folk with the same problem (as ever it was great to know it was not just me!!) There was word of them sorting it out and then the next day's update was fine, no problem with Legacy at all. Clearly whatever had been the problem issue had been fixed.

Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley,

That is one of the things that keeps me loyal to AVG.

They seem to be very "on the ball" as far as sorting out problems are concerned. It's usually only days (if even that long) after someone mentions a problem that a fix is suddenly provided on the next update.

I also won't be surprised if they want me to pay them more money to fix what is THEIR problem! Have had that happen before too!

Off to do email, then wrestle with McAfee!

Well,

I emailed McAfee at their support address explaining the problem because I just didn't have time to sit through a chat session. Good thing I wasn't holding my breath. Still haven't heard from them. Of course, the weekend before Christmas probably isn't a good time to try to get in touch with anyone!

If I replace McAfee, which should I do first: Uninstall McAffee or download something else, then uninstall McAfee?

Hi Carol
I'd be tempted to uninstall one prog before installing the replacement. Just incase the installation causes any clashes. (or indeed, crashes! )

Best wishes
Lesley

Yes Carol,

Quite a few of the antivirus programs get really paranoid if you try to install when another program is already installed.

Either the existing one objects to the new one or the new one objects to the existing one. I understand the problem when this happens is that all antivirus progs include a database of virus names with some indication of parts (harmless) of their content. As you can imagine, this raises red flags either with the new prog or the old one!

Do remember to make a System Restore point before uninstalling or installing. That will allow you to go back to where you were before you made any changes.

Last word - If you do install AVG, don't be surprised if it finds stuff that McAfee has completely overlooked.

Chapter 7 or is it 8?

Still haven't heard a word from McAfee so I went googling for a McAfee blog to see what the chatter on the internet was, mainly was I the only one with this problem? Found an article from the Washington Post saying that McAfee admitted last week that it's recent update had caused major problems. The other stories made mine seem like whinning. Many businesses including hospitals got caught up in this!

The good news: The article said that McAfee had stated that the offending part of the update had been pushed out as of last Friday so I decided to risk a restart of my computer which I have been studiously avoiding since the last System Restore. [woohoo]

Here's to McAfee: xmas:razz:

Merry Christmas, everyone I got my smileys back! xmas:biggrin:

Well, good for McAfee for admitting they were at fault =D>

Isn't it great to be able to "express your emoticons" again

Hi All

I missed this post earlier, had xmas things to do xmas:biggrin:
I got rid of MaCafee earlier this year, even though I had a few months left on the programme.
I found that after an update it made my computer almost unusuable just moving on a page here on TS took the devil of an age. As for other sites well I was going spare just waiting, even had time to go a bake a cake and ice it xmas:cheesygrin: Ok that is a bit of a lie, I didnt ice the cake xmas:cheesygrin:
I was recomonded to go for AVG freebie, and ended up buying the full bells and whistles xmas:biggrin: xmas:biggrin: the only complaint I have with AVG is the restart each day :D but oh well it works very well, so I shouldnt really complain. As for the big commercial products, not a great fan anymore after the trouble with Macafee and Nortons refusing to acknowledge I had an account with them xmas:mad Oh and heres the classic, with Nortons I actually got to speak to someone, I had just been on the site and my account was there, after speaking to this individual, guess what, my account disappeared!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I was such an optimist! After reading on the internet that McAfee had instituted a fix for the problem, I went ahead with a restart and the downloaded updates worked--for 24 hours. About an hour ago I did another restart as McAfee had been downloading more updates. Must have sent me the expired ones because there I was right back where the problem started! No Ancestry, no access to McAfee support, no smileys!!!

Have done another System Restore. Will ignore further downloads from McAfee until after Christmas, then it's off to the dump with McAfee!

Right now, I'm going to go bake cookies!

Merry Christmas! xmas:biggrin:
