Ruhleben - First World War British civilian POWs

Post by Chris Paton » Tue Jan 01, 2008 11:34 pm

For some time now I have been working on a project to try and identify the names of the 5500 or so British civilian POWs interned in Ruhleben, near Berlin, during the First World War. In the last week alone I have added about 250 names to this list, which now stands at over 1700 entries, with detailed biographical entries on many of them, all of which can be accessed for free at http://ruhleben.tripod.com . My great uncle was interned there for two years from 1916 - 1918, which was the original motivation for the project, but it has somewhat taken on a life of its own!

If you had a relative at Ruhleben, and can contribute in any way, I would love to hear fom you! :)

Hi Chris,

A tremendous amount of work and dedication obviously went into this project...an absolutely wonderful resource. I don't believe I had any relatives at Ruhleben, so can't contribute in any way, but here's hoping others will be able to do so, and if not, a great many others will definitely benefit from your work.

Regards,
Anne H
