GRO - Price Rises

Post by Falkyrn » Mon Mar 01, 2010 6:57 pm

The GRO have just announced a raft of changes to their pricing structure but basically the costs of certificates are to rise from the current £7 to £9.25

Its been a long time coming i think, not many companies have held prices since 2003. The influx of people researching due to WDYTYA must also have put a huge strain on them and if rising certificate costs helps get certificate deliveries back to two weeks or less i dont mind paying it but until then, where's my list, better get ordering :)

I'd complain but the last time I ordered a death certificate from the State of Michigan here in the USA, it cost me $26.00 USD and that was because I had all the information and they didn't have to do a search!

I don't understand why they can't have a system for providing uncertified copies of "historical" certificates - seems crazy to have pay to go through the "certification" process. Anyone searching in London - the LMA images on Ancestry have been this Australian genealogist's dream come true - providing baptisms, marriages and burials.

Meanwhile - the reason I have more UK than Australian certificates - cheapest ones here are $17 (currently about 7 pounds) for a transcript, with some states charging very much more - $28 to $44.

Just out of interest, in comparison and forgetting what information they may or may not contain, what do other countries charge ?

I suppose we should be grateful that they have held their charges for 7 years.

However, I feel the flat rate allowing certificate applications with no reference numbers to be obtained at the same price as those where the information is provided is a little unfair.
