Hi houston and welcome [scotland-flag]
Please tell us a bit more about these people. What do you know and what are you hoping to find out? When and where were William and Maryann born?
Have you been able to find them in all of the censuses?
A little more information will give us a better chance of tracking them down.

All the best,
Sarah

The English census 1841 - 1901 is available at a pay site - ancestry.co.uk
The English census 1841- 1911 is also at a different pay site findmypast.co.uk
There are also various free to view transcriptions on the internet - one of the most useful is freecen http://www.freecen.org.uk/ but I am not sure what the kent coverage is like.

I have a couple of suggestions that seem to be your folks
1861 Census - Mary A Monk age 18 born Preston Kent, living Preston Kent - district is Faversham
John Monk head mar 50 ag lab born Kent Sheldwich
Mary do wife mar 49 -- do do
Mary A do daur U 18 scholar born Kent Preston
Sarah do dau U 12 do do do
Emma do daur 11 do do do
John do son 9 do do do
Stephen do son 6 do do do

1871 Kent Faversham - 6 St John's Road - Mary lists herself as wife - there is no "head" listed - presumably William is at sea
Mary A gillham wife Mar 28 born Kent Preston
Frederick do son 5 do Faversham
Elizabeth do daur 3 do do
Agnes do dau 4 mo do do
Charlotte Gillham sister 14 scholar kent Newnham

Using Charlotte as a guide this may be William's family in 1861
1861 Kent Newnham
Address Lower Champion ?
Charles Gillam head mar 48 ag labourer Kent Stallisfield
Ann do wife mar 47 - do Faversham
William do son U 19 seaman do Eastling
Charles do son U 14 - do Newnham
Sarah Ann do daur U 12 Kent Newnham
Thomas do son 9 do do
Frank do son 8 do do
James do son 6 do do
Charlotte Maria do dau 3 do do

You will find the 1881 Census transcript here - no charge
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... census.asp
Hopefully you can find more details of the family there.
You should be able to find an index to the births of everyone (post 1837) at Freebdm - here
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ The marriages should also be able to be found - Edit - not having alot of joy for the early marriages - they may be before civil registration (July 1837)

Hi again,
With the hints from the 1861 census that Trish found, here is the family in 1851. What a large family! If you ever decide to try to track down all of William's siblings, it will keep you amused for a long, long, time... There are at least 11 between these two censuses.

1851
84 Lower Champion Courts, Newnham, Kent
Charles Gilham, Head, 38, Agricultural Labourer, born Kent, Stallisfield
Ann, Wife, 37, born Kent, Faversham
Frederick, Son, 14, born Kent, Faversham
Frances, Daur, 13, born Kent, Faversham
William, Son, 9, born Kent, Earthing
Lewis Gilham, Son, 7, born Kent, Earthing
George Gilham, Son, 5, born Kent, Earthing
Charles Gilham, Son, 3, born Kent, Newnham
Sarah Ann Gilham, Daur, 2, born Kent, Newnham
Thomas Gilham, Son, 1 mo, born Kent, Newnham

It's interesting to see the record of their moves by the different birthplaces of the children.

By 1871 both parents have died and the children are scattered here and there. From FreeBMD it looks like Charles died in 1869 and Ann in the first quarter of 1871, so just before the census was taken.

Happy hunting!
Sarah

Could someone please confirm deny or correct the 1851 census on the above Gillham William/Monk Mary Ann. which says place of birth as Earthing - Question: Should this rather be Eastling
Thanking you

Hi Houston,
Yes indeed, it should be Eastling. Either someone has corrected it online since I posted, or (more likely) I was not seeing (or thinking) straight when I typed that

All the best,
Sarah
