Hi all

To my knowledge, though I'm not an English lawyer, it was not uncommon for women to have money left to them in trust or tied up in trust by their marriage contract which would keep it out of the hands of their husband and thus protect the capital from any dissipation by him. I would think that it is likely that the couple borrowed the money from Sarah's trust, possibly for a business venture and the agreement was that the husband paid his share back into the trust on his death.

Thanks for the additional replies.

I appreciate your input Anne, guess we'll never find out what really went on.

Trish, I think the Edwin mentioned in your 1841 find is brother to Sarah who married Thomas Jarvis and the 1851 folks are the offspring of Edwin and Grandchildren to the original Edmund Hilder that was discussed on this thread.

Further research has Sarah's mother Elizabeth Noakes (wife of Edmund Hilder Sr.) a first cousin to Thomas, so I guess he married his first cousin once removed. Such a tangled web
