Hi there,
Can anyone help me with this wee tangle.I've come across info on a person that is ...in of Bedwin, Magna, Westshire, England .I have taken this to mean Great Bedwyn, Westshire . While trying to find this I have come up with Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire. Is there a map that may show Westshire? Is it a local term ?This is found on info dated 1835 if that helps.
Thanks in advance,
HeatherK

Go to www.streetmap.co.uk and search for Great Bedwyn. The search comes back with Wiltshire. It seems to be about 60 or so miles west of London, or about 20 miles south of Oxford.

Hello Heather
I've not found any Westshire references in my 1932 gazetteer...but here is the description ......
Bedwyn, Great, parish and town, with railroad station, Wiltshire, 4 1/2 m. SW of Hungerford; 4007 acres, pop.824, eccl. dist 701. Here Jane Seymour was married to Henry VIII in 1536.
Hope this helps
Best wishes
Jean

Hello Heather
The county boundary between Berkshire and Wiltshire runs through our farm, Little Bedwyn being just over the border and Great Bedwyn 3 or 4 miles further on.
We are in West Berkshire and the area beyond Wiltshire is known as the West country so it could be Westshire is derived from this but more probably a corruption of Wiltshire.
Let me know if I can be of any practical assistance as I pass through the Bedwyns nearly ever day.
Regards Aileen
