Grandparents in Leicester & Halifax .....

Post by Kaye Dunsmore » Thu Oct 19, 2006 9:39 pm

Hi, Can't seem to find any trace of my Grandparents --
John Woodhead born in Halifax around 1880-85 his Dad had a barbers shop. Found 2 Johns about the right age but 1's Dad is a cotton Spinner and the other's Dad is a Carpet weaver.
Kate Burrows born in Leicester around the same time -- had a sister Florence.
They must have married around 1895- 1900 in Leicester.

Glad of any suggestions - have looked in the Search the Archives site at the free census without any luck!

The Scottish people site is soooo much easier to use than any English ones I've tried -- or -since I'm pretty new to all this - are there better sites I just don't know about???

Thanks for any help

Hi Kaye,

Have you tried www.Ancestry.co.uk ?

The 1881 and 1901 census are free at the moment, ok you don't get the images but you do get a list of who was in the house and if you click on each individual you get a pretty good idea of the family set up.

If you post all the info you have, like Kate's parents if you know them, it'll help track down the right families.

Best wishes
Donna

Me again Kaye,

On www.freebmd.org.uk there is a marriage of a John Woodhead in Leicester registered in March 1906 (marriage could have been anywhere from late December 1905 to March 1906). When you click on the page, the other names on that page include Kate Burrows.

I've also checked it on Ancestry as this gives you the option of ordering the certificate...but I can't find where that option is. Hopefully someone else on here, whose braincells are still functioning, will find it for you as that should, she says hopefully, give you the names of their parents and help you trace them via the census/other certificates and even get you into the timeframe for the IGI (www.familysearch.org).

Good luck
Donna

Hi Kaye, Whilst you are waiting for the marriage cert , that Donna told you about, for confirmation of the couples fathers etc, have a look at this family from the 1881 Census Family search site.

Dwelling-38 High Street
Census Place Northowram, York, England

Edward WOODHEAD Head M Male 39 Bradford, York, England Barber And Newsagent
Emma WOODHEAD Wife M Female 34 Queensbury, York, England
Alice Maud WOODHEAD Daur Female 10 Queensbury, York, England Worsted Spinner
Lucy WOODHEAD Daur Female 8 Queensbury, York, England Scholar
Joseph WOODHEAD Son Male 6 Queensbury, York, England Scholar
Elizabeth WOODHEAD Daur Female 5 Queensbury, York, England Scholar
Johnny WOODHEAD Son Male 3 Queensbury, York, England
Riley WOODHEAD Son Male 1 Queensbury, York, England

Now as this could be just coincidence with the fathers occupation, also a couple of years out on his approx birth year, and his place of birth is a wee bit out too, (but on a straight rail route, not far!), I thought I would check the 1901 census index for young Riley,(easier than Johnny) and there he is!! Born in Queensbury but living in Halifax with mum Emma as head of house, in the 1901 census. Click on others in same household and there is Johnny, born Queensbury.

Maybe John just thought he was born in Halifax, or as many people did, just named the nearest big town. Have to wait for fathers name to confirm though.

Marriages March 1906

Woodhead John Leicester 7a 276
Burrows Kate Leicester 7a 276 ...........is the one i think Donna posted.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Certificates.html will tell you how to go about ordering the certificate and give you the option of ordering from the local registrar office or the GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ - the link to GRO will tell you the fees (although i think its cheaper to order on line than by post)

Good luck
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Yep Tracey, that's the one, although I'm sure that there used to be a link on Ancestry saying "order now" or something to that effect. I'm sure that's how one of my cousins got her ancestors marriage cert, although, if you contact the local records office Kaye, they generally are about half the price and not so busy...bit of WDYTYA syndrome seems to be knocking out the GROS timescales.

Good luck

Hello Kaye,

Me again,

Sorry I always think of something else after I've submitted my reply!

I've just had a look for the birth of a Kate Burrows in Leicester based on the census information kindly provided by Maggie.

There is the registration of a Kate Burrows in Leicester in December 1881 Vol 7a Page 175. This again can be found on Freebmd by putting in Births and Kate Burrows. I just thought that, perhaps, if you were going to contact Leicester for the marriage cert that you could kill two birds etc and get this one as it would confirm her father's name and give her mothers name too, which, I believe, the marriage cert will not tell you.

I am going now, otherwise I'll not get my wee Archie from nursery!

MAGIC -- thanks to all

I can't believe how just posting a question here has helped me with my search!!
The Woodhead family in the 1881 census found by IanS ( My son's called Ian too) is probably the right family -- a barber and 3 of his childrens names crop up in my aunts and uncles -- pretty confident in that one, Thanks a lot.

Also the Burrows found by Maggie, My Mother spoke of an Aunt Florence and an Uncle Arthur, I'm pretty sure, so that sounds good too.

Thanks a million for your help and ideas of sites to visit in my future searches-- I thought I was never going to find anything on my English family -- I have my Scottish ancestors back to 1651 in some of the branches of the tree, so felt a bit down about failing to even get into the 19th centuary with Mum's lot!!

Just to add www.gro.gov.uk is currently aiming to have your certificates sent to you within 6 days. I have put in several orders in the last month and I have received them all in that timescale.
Ordering from local offices is no cheaper.

Meg
Main family lines are Harpers from Midlothian, Fife & Kinross-shire, and Dobies/Dobbies from Midlothian. Also Strathearn, Stobie, Layden and Downie.
