JAMES AND JANE McDONALD, i can't find..

Post by Heyjude » Wed Jan 17, 2007 11:18 am

I am from New Zealand and have been given heaps of paper work on ancesters from elderly relatives, I know nothing about going about putting everything together (as some of you might have guessed).!!!

I will slowly put stuff already collected into a folder when I get days off, or should I say years off...!! in the mean time, can anyone help me with James McDonald c1839 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England he married Jane Scott c1842 she was born in Girvan Scotland.

Jane's fathers name was William Scott, her mother Sarah unknown maiden name.

Another very brick wall is Thomas Shepheard c ? 1827 born in Kent UK he married Jane Holmes born in London 1833, They married in NZ

Thomas Shepheard was the name of Thomas father, his mother's name was Margaret no maiden name on the christening certificate, which makes me think he was illegit, also no marriage certificate found.. We think he was brought up by an uncle..Thomas left England aged 16..

My question is who was Margaret and how do I crack that hugh wall ?
And who brought up Thomas???

All help would be appreicated

Heyjude,
I'll make a start with Thomas Shepheard.
Is this the birth?

Thomas Shepheard
b. 15 Jun 1824
chr 19 Jun 1825 St Alphage, Greenwich, Kent
Fa: Thomas Shepheard
Mo: Margaret

If so, and he did indeed leave for NZ at age 16, then you will just miss him on the 1841 census :(

But, if that's not him and he was born later, there are a couple of candidates in 1841

East Peckham, Malling, Twyford Hundred, Wateringbury, Kent
John Shephard 71 Blacksmith
Mary Shepahrd, 70
Elizabeth Shephard 30
Henry Shephard 23
Thomas Shephard 14

They were all born in Kent. Thomas could be the grandson.

Hurst farm, Bexley, Dartford, Ruxley Hundred, Kent (this one is closer to Greenwich, where the Thomas on the IGI was christened)

John Shepard 60 Bailey
Thos Shepard, 15 Ag Lab
Isabella Shepard 85 Ind
Maria Shepard 15

Again, all were born in Kent. But they are still there (except Isabella) in 1851, so can't be him.

Any thoughts on all of this?
Regards,
Sarah

Now for the Scotts & MacDonalds... A few thoughts to start with.

William Scott married Sarah Beatie on 21 Dec 1840 in Girvan, Ayr (this an extracted entry from the IGI)

No sign of Jane's birth. Could it have been elsewhere?

Could this be James' birth?
James Mac Donald
Chr. 3 Mar 1839 Highhead, Cumberland
Fa: Thomas
Mo Elizabeth

Sarah
