Lost Hodgkiss family 1901 .....

Post by Sue Erskine » Mon May 28, 2007 5:58 pm

Hi

I have spent months searching for my G G Grandmother, Mary Maria Hodgkiss, in 1901 census. I have a full picture of her life with the exception of this census and it's so frustrating! :? I've tried all sorts of variations of Hodgkiss in both England and Scotland and I'm now hoping someone on here will come up with something that I've missed!

I have Mary Maria's birth on 27th Feb 1891 at Careless Green, Wollescote, Worcestershire - father William Hodgkiss and mother Mary Ann Burns. Then the family at the same address in the 1891 census:

William Hodgkiss Head Age 46 Chainmaker born Wollescote
Mary A Hodgkiss Wife Age 44 born Wollescote
Sydney Son Age 9 all children born Wollescote
Percy Son Age 6
Lilly Daur Age 4
Mary M Daur Age mths

Mary Maria Hodgkiss then married Matthew Watson in 1910 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire. At the time of her marriage she was a Domestic Servant. Her sister Lily was unmarried and a witness at the wedding. Father and mother were named (no deceased after either of their names). I then have the birth certs of her children and her death cert in 1957 still living in Lanarkshire.

I just have this dirty great gap in 1901 for the whole family- they could easily have been living in England or Scotland but prior to 1891 they seemed pretty settled in Worcestershire (I have Hodgkiss family back to 1851 in the same area)

Any suggestions???

Yours frustratingly ](*,)

Hi Sue

I'm not seeng them anywhere in 1901 either. Perhaps they simply were between residences or were missed for some other reason. Not helpful I realize but it does happen. I dug around a bit more and found that Lily married in Airdrie in 1911 and their brother Sidney died in that area a single man many years later with Matthew his informant. Sidney is recorded with a first name of Enoch on his DC and both William and Mary Ann are noted as deceased by this time.

Best wishes
Jean

Lost Hodgkiss family

Hi Jean

Many many thanks for spending the time trying to help - at least it shows I'm not doing anything fundamentally wrong! I've tried so many variations of name/wildcards that I've run out of ideas.

Co-incidentally I also found Lilys marriage yesterday but I haven't done any searching for the other siblings so Sidney's death is new for me. I'd not heard of Enoch at all, first time of showing in the family tree but as this is an English branch they don't follow the naming conventions that are so useful in tracing the Scottish rellys. However, it may prove very useful going back in time.

It certainly sounds as if the whole family were up in Airdrie rather than just Mary Maria so I'm slowly building a picture.

Thanks again for your help - I'll carry on hunting
Sue
