I think I may have Viking ancestry and when visiting Iceland 2 years ago, was told that there is a website for this. Apparently, a surname is sufficient to denote this ancestry.

Can you help, please? Thanks.

Hi Reinawhyte,
Yes, there is a website called Íslendingabók which has 95% of all Icelanders since the first census 1703 and about 50% of all born here, and that means since we were settled from mainly Norway around 970 AD or just before. Some Irish monks who were here before that probably had relatively few descendants. The archive was compiled a few years ago from all known trees as a tool for medical research.
However we only have a few surnames, which were often adopted under Danish influence a century or so ago. Generally, we use patronymics or much more recently matronymics so surnames are not so useful unless you belong to an exalted family.
If you have a forbear from Iceland, I can check on the site for you if you can give me a name and dates.

Guid hunting,

Thrall

Dear Reinawhyte

Sory that I did not answer you before, but for some reason I did not get any mail about the new post :(

Unfortunately, I can not help with this issue and Thrall seems to know a little more about this.

JENS LARSEN WESTH B. 1797
Is there any possibility of getting information on the parents and grandparents of the abovementioned - Siblings, Uncles - I understand there was a boatbuilder in the family line.
Also how far back do the records go in Denmark. My mothers name was Thyra Danabod Westh and I have seen that in the 7th generation of the Cornelius line

Any help will gratefully accepted.
Kind regards
Houston

It seems that they have Ahnentafel for several West-families. They can be borrowed on paper, but I do not know if they will send the information :?:
But you might contact them and ask if they can help you.

Hello
i have a Lorenzo Eid in my tree but very limited information on him other than he did exsist
he is buried in Belfast in Clifton street cemetrey his headstone gives testament to him having been a native of Norway he died in December 1835 aged 33 years old so a possible birth date of 1802 .the only clue i have to the place he came from is Tronthiem/Dronthiem the records of him in Ireland give him as being a ships broker /interpreter of foreign languages .I have been told that lorenzo will be an anglised name and that the name was probably something like Laurent .I have tried various things over the years to try to find out who he could possibly have been but have always drawn a blank
any help in tracking down any possible Laurent Eid would be appreciated
kind regards
maggie

Hello Maggie

It is very unfortunate that he seems to be born just after the 1801 census, but I shall try my best :D

You will hear from me soon.
