Passenger Arrival - Christina Campbell or Christine McLuckie

Post by Smuggler » Fri Nov 28, 2008 8:50 pm

Hello
Thanks to the wonderful assistance of others on this list I have information that indicates that my gt gt grandmother arrived in Australia in the period after the 1871 Census for Scotland and 16th February 1877 when she married my gt gt grandfather William Harvey Johnson in Sydney Australia. She could have entered under the names Christina Campbell or Christina McLuckie. Christine was born 1855 in Glasgow.

I have checked any available online indexes for QLD, NSW and Vic without success to date. Have also regularly looked at the Mariners site as well. Would be delighted with any suggestions as to further research clues into her arrival. Her Death Certificate in 1885 notes her as being 10 years in the Colony and while using this as a starting point realise this may be only an estimate.

With thanks
Anne Wiltshire

Hello Anne

I've searched at A.. without success (NSW arrivals) but there are many Miss Campbells arriving from interstate to Sydney in the right timetable. I have family arriving in NSW in a similar timeframe that I have never found, which is most frustrating. Unassisted immigrants have little documentation, if you paid your fare, no-one was too interested with the details.

Do you know if Christina arrived alone, or came with other family? Or had family waiting for her in Oz. If she came through Brisbane, only the assisted immigrants are online for Queensland, so an email to the archives may assist. They usually answer queries quite quickly.

On fmp they have emigrants leaving England from 1890. The national archives in London may have earlier records - perhaps not indexed.
