thanks for that - I know you posted in December but I only saw it now. By any chance do you know of genealogy sites in Australia which might connect to family names? My problem is that I have an acestor Helen Mitchell born 1846 Strathdon who is said to have gone to Australia. She had an illegitimate son in 1868 (called Charles Mitchell) and my last sighting of each of them in Scotland is in the 1871 census. Presumably if she went at all it was between 1871 and 1881. I'm concerned that she may not have travelled as Mitchell and have no idea where to strat looking. Any ideas?

As far as name searching goes I am not to sure what is available in Aust at present as I havent needed to do any searching here. But I do know there isnt a facility like SP here.

When I get some time I will try to have a look at the stuff available in the State Library.
