We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock.

All the best,

Hi Dennis:
I couldn't find a book by that exact title, but there is a record at the National Library of Scotland, and the Library of Congress for a book - number 8 in a series titled "Missions of the United Free Church of Scotland" published Edinburgh : Offices of the United Free Church of Scotland
The title is listed there as Lovedale, South Africa by J. Lennox It says there are 32 p. published 1903
On the following site, there is a book listed as a reprint titled Lovedale, South Africa by James Stewart published 1911. It includes a list of 200 names. It may be possible that the original book has been supplemented with further writings or collections by James Stewart. It's a practice that is not unheard of in publishing. It may be worth a try and it's not very expensive.

Hello Dennis,
No luck with the book but I noticed there’s quite a lot of information in the Scotsman newspaper about various members of your Lennox family and their careers. If you haven’t been there before it might be worth a look. There’ll be a half price offer for the month of December. http://archive.scotsman.com/pricing.cfm
Items include:
The Scotsman - 12th February 1941
A lengthy John Lennox Obituary.
The Scotsman - 11th July 1928
A John Lennox Biography.
The Scotsman - 20th October 1937
Marriage notice of Alan Trolard Lennox.
The Scotsman - 29th November 1939
Birth of their daughter.
There’re lots more, if you want more detail or if you get stuck please let me know,
Alan

Hello Dennis,
Here’s a rough summary of the obit (contains about 400 words)
The Scotsman - Wednesday, 12th February 1941
Noted Missionary Rev John Lennox dead
Chief work was associated with Lovedale
Died at daughters residence Johannesburg age 73
Wife died 20 years previously
Survived by son (Civil Engineer London) & daughter
Native of Edinburgh - details of education and career
Senior Chaplain to SA Native Labour Corps WW1 France
Military O.B.E. and twice Mentioned in Dispatches
Honorary D.D. Uni. of Edin. 1936
Search for the following and anything else that comes to mind about any family member who may have got into the Scotsman.
Rev john lennox (phrase)
Alan lennox (phrase)
Lennox Lovedale (all words)
Note that pdf and text views are also available and that if right clicking to save images the article may be broken into segments and you may not get the lot. Segments are fairly visible by inverting background.
Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi Alan,
Thank you for your continued assistance, it is invaluable. I took out a 1 month half-price for the Scotsman and saved the obit in text. Edinburgh Uni let me know of his M.A. in 1888. Didn't know that you could get an undergraduate Masters degree, but apparently you can if its from a really old school.
I joined Ancestry24 for the South African searches. So far I've had no luck being able to post in any forum and they are trying to source the problem.
Any idea on how I can track Rev. Lennox's OBE from WW1?
All the best. dennis

Hello Dennis,
That’s okay, only too glad to help.
There was a previous discussion about an O.B.E. http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... hlight=obe The publication referred to appears to be “Burke's Handbook to the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire” published 1921. Maybe he gets a mention there but it would probably depend on whether the award was gazetted before the publication date, it may not have been.
There’s a description of the book here http://www.naval-military-press.com/han ... 20496.html and a library finder here http://books.google.com.au/books?id=b7J ... ish+empire
Because it was an Imperial Award I thought it would have been in the London Gazette but I can’t find him there. http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/Advanc ... ype=London
He’s briefly mentioned on page 351 (Appendix VII) of “THE HISTORY OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN FORCES IN FRANCE” (available for download in several formats) under O.B.E. (Military Division), as Lennox, Captain and Chaplain J S.A.N.L.C. (S.A. Native Labour Corps) so assuming that’s correct we know it was a military rather than civilian award. (See also brief reference to Mrs Lennox p332? - something to do with Rehab of wounded soldiers?)
The searchable Recommendations for Awards in WO373 appear also to apply to Dominion forces but they seem to be saying that many of the earlier records have not survived http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... /wo373.asp
According to this site the Documentation Service of the South African National Defence Force has individual service records of South African personnel from 1913 onwards. http://www.militarymuseum.co.za/ANCESTORS.html
Here’s a S.A. Air Force link, the records mentioned and contacts appear to be for all branches of Defence. http://www.saairforce.co.za/the-airforc ... df-archive
Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Hi.
I've placed 2 posts on ancestry24, one on the Rev. John Lennox referred to above and the other on Albert Mitchell Lennox who packed up the family and went from Morocco to East London, South Africa after WW2.
I've been having probs on that site with regards to the Area of interest: General; Topic of interest: BMD, as I get a server error. I ended up posting in the Family & school reunions area.
