Gayfield Street, Glasgow

[Norman Downs]

Can anyone tell me where Gayfield Street in Glasgow was. It's shown as the residence of an ancestor in 1896, but does not appear to exist now.

What district was this Residence ?
There is a GARFIELD Street of Duke Street

It was in the Garenthill area of the city, just to the north of the city centre and now under the M8!

An old town plan shows it in 1894

about the middle of the very foot of the map.
It's a short street running off Scotia Street, between City Road and Shamrock street.

In modern day terms - to the west of Stow College [on Shamrock Street] underneath the tangle of St Georges Cross/ Great Western road /M8 junctions.

Glad you found it Wilma - now I can hang my washing out! I've been looking all round Garnethill on that map for the last 30 minutes and couldn't see it - I'd have been there all day!

I'm not too keen on this layers thing when you are looking for a particular street although it's great for a look at how things have changed.

You’ve already nailed it Wilma but here’s some Glasgow Herald mentions.

1855 – Houses to let Scotia Street and Gayfield Street, New City Road.
1858 – Robbery at Gayfield Street, Cowcaddens.
1884 – “That large corner block, consisting of shops and dwelling houses, forming Nos. 5, 7, and 7A Scotia Street and 7 Gayfield Street, New City Road.
1900 – Address of Mr Foster, factor, Gayfield Street, George’s Cross.

Later: There are no less than 34 BDM notices in the Glasgow Herald from 1856 to 1898. That seems to be a lot for such a short street. (Later Later: on 2nd thought maybe not - Alan)

Good, I wish it was nice enough to hang mine out - maybe it'll clear up?

I don't use the layers, I tend to have a modern google or multi map then the NLS maps open in different windows and compare that way -if I don't have a Glasgow paper map open on my knee!!!

Hi Norman,

My Great Grandparents, John Bonner and Martha Bonner (m.s. McAdams) were living in Gayfield Street in 1896. Four of their children were born there, one at number 15 and the other three at number 7.

According to their BC's, it was in the Kelvin registration district.

My wife's great grandparents, Alexander Gay and Elizabeth (maiden name Campbell), were living at number 8, also in 1896 when their son John (my wife's grandfather) was born. It would seem very likely that the families probably knew each other.

Isn't it wonderful the way this genealogy stuff makes the world a very much smaller place.

Your wife's rellies and mine very probably did know each other quite well, as communities were far more sociable back then.
