Fauldhead in Lenzie or Kirkintilloch

Post by winger » Wed Jan 12, 2011 10:24 pm

Hi,

I have a death certificate from 1963 which lists the place of death as Fauldhead, the death is registered in Lenzie, Burgh of Kirkintilloch and the deceased was an ex-inmate of Woodilee Asylum - the occupier signs the death certificate as J W McGilvrey.
There is no house number so I am wondering if this was some other type of home, perhaps and old folks home or something. I checked with the Scottish hospital archives and unfortunately they have the admission records in 1930 but not the discharge records, so I have no idea how long this person was in this accommodation or why. If anyone can shed any light on this mystery I would be very grateful.

Hello Winger,

Fauldhead Farm was originally part of Barony Parochial Asylum, which, in the late 1890s, became Glasgow District Asylum, Woodilee. I’m not sure how the farm and Asylum fitted in geographically.

There are a couple of references in Parliamentary Papers which I’ve summarised.

1897 [C.8573] Thirty-ninth annual report of the General Board of Commissioners in lunacy for Scotland.

Report on Barony Parochial Asylum, February 1896.
Distribution of the patients.
In main building: 297M, 360F, Total 657
In farm house: 30M, 2F, Total 32.
In Fauldhead: 0M, 7F, Total 7.
In Muckcroft: 12M, 2F, Total 14.
In Gate Lodge: 7M, 1F, Total 8.
Total: 346M, 372F, Total 718.

1914-16 [Cd. 7944] First annual report of the General Board of Control for Scotland.

Report on Glasgow District Asylum, Woodilee, November, 1914.
Approval to erect 14 houses for married members of the staff, to replace four unsuitable houses which had been adapted from the outbuildings of Fauldhead Farm.

The way in which the buildings at Fauldhead were used probably varied over time.

Hope that helps a bit,
Alan

Hi Winger:

The first of these three sites may be the most helpful.

http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/73 ... ain+block/
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sjay.macl/ ... odilee.htm
http://www.hiddenglasgow.com/Asylums/Woodilee.htm

Also, depending on where you live, you might check the Mitchell Library Poor Records to determine a time-frame, as the residents of the Asylum were paupers.

Hope this helps,
Frances

thank you both for your reply - it makes a bit more sense now! the person in question was my grandmother and she was admitted to woodilee in 1930, as there was no discharge papers for her I was puzzled that the place of death seemed to be a private home - I am assuming at the moment, going on the info you have supplied that she had been moved from the main hospital to one of the homes/houses in the surrounding area but still within hospital grounds.
I actually found her admission report through the Mitchell on her husbands Poorlaw, he left her there to die.

Still - at least I have a wee bit more information on where she passed away, thanks again.
