I have a vessel Bermondsey arriving in New South Wales, Australia on 7 Dec 1848 with a James Thallon and his wife, assisted immigration passenger list.
It shows the origin location as Milford, Ayrshire, Scotland: I cannot find this place. The place name is clear to read on the original document but has either changed or it may be an error.
Can anyone help?

Re: Milford, Ayrshire, Scotland?
Hi Brabason:
I've checked Gazeteer for Scotland http://www.scottish-places.info/ and Mapquest http://www.mapquest.co.uk/ Milford doesn't surface in the Gazeteer, but, on Mapquest, it comes up as Milford near Ayr. This would lead me to think it is either an area which has been incorporated into the town of Ayr, or perhaps a farm or home.
Someone with ties to the area may be along soon, and supply a better answer.
Frances

It's a very unusual name but all I have are questions since I can't find anybody at Ayrshire.
Did he sail from Scotland?
What was his wife's name and how much do you know about his family?
Regards,
Annette

Are you sure that’s where they’re from? Looks like Dublin to me with Milford, Ayrshire for someone else near the top of the list. See Bermondsey, 1848, here http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/l ... 2.jpg&No=4

Alan ....snipped.......
That entry at the top is for Thomas and Margaret RAE. He's shown as born in Roth[e]say, Ayrshire, - which county Rothesay is not in, - it's the county of Bute. It's Margaret who is shown as born in Milford, Ayrshire. Given that Millport is the main town on the isle of Cumbrae, also in the county of Bute, I'd put a lot of money on Milford being a mishearing or mistrancription of Millport !
Cumbrae is only a couple of miles from the Ayrshire coast and often wrongly thought of as being in Ayrshire. Rothesay is a good miles further from the Ayrshire coast.

Thanks for your help and the link to the report on the voyage. The Ancestry.com transcription wrongly attributed the ship as sailing from Milford (it sailed from Gravesend). James Thallon born Dublin about 1822 was the link I was looking for; James and Teresa were married in the old Parish Church at St Pancras, London in 1846 and sailed to Australia in 1848. Note that 1845-1850 was the second famine in Ireland, a good reason to leave the place.
