Population.....

Post by wini » Wed Apr 05, 2006 12:11 pm

Where can I find the population of kilmuir by Uig and Durness and Eddrachillis from around 1850 to about 1910.
There seems to have been an awful lot of people there 90 per cent with the same names.
I get a headache trying to work out who is who and who is cousin to who

Hi Wini

The census is the only place that you will get population but it would not give relationships between households.

You can of course work back,as far as you can, with your own line then look at the siblings of the furthest back members of your family. Then work forward again following each siblings line - but you would need a lot of spare time and cash.

Hi Wini,

There are summary books of the census statistics that would give you these figures. I don't know how widely available these books are. I have seen them in New Register House and Edinburgh Central Library. Outside of Scotland, these books may be difficult to find.

Another (a bit laborious) way of doing so form a distance away is if you hire the microfilms of the censuses of these parishes / registration districts to your local LDS Family History Centre, then look up the summary pages at the front of each enumeration book, then these figures can be added up to reach (hopefully) the same answer.

All the best,

AndrewP

One on-line source for population stats are gazetteers. If you go to www.visionofbritain.org.uk jsp and search for the parish or town names you should get entries from Groomes gazetteer - it will give general population figures from around 1800 to 1881. The level of detail varies between places but you might get some of the info you want. Plus the other information on the places is really useful!

Hope this helps
Tom

Another possibility would be the Third Statistical Account.

Good libraries may have it in the Reference section
