I am trying to trace my family history and I don't think I am very good at it

Don't panic Kay!

The information on a death certificate is only as good as the knowledge of the person providing the information.

If the informant was a son or even grandson or other then it's very possible that they wouldn't know what thier Grandmother's maidenname was.

The information on a marriage cert is much more accurate [usually] as the person concerned was able to give the info themselves.

Who is the informant on the death certificate?
is he/she a relative that you'd expect to find there, and are all the other details correct?
[age, spouse, place of death etc]

If so I'd be fairly sure that you had the correct person and probably fin that the Duke is a surname distantly connected to the family in some other way.

Thanks for your reply Wilma - You have helped me before.

The 1863 marriage certificate has the following info -

William Buchanan - Parents James Buchanan and Catherine Buchanan
nee McIntyre

Mary Ann Hunt - Parents Thomas Hunt and Margaret Hunt nee Elliot

The 1905 death certificate has the following info -

Mary Ann Buchanan - Parents Thomas Henry Hunt and Margaret
Hunt nee Duke

William Buchanan her husband signed the death certificate.

For your info my grandmother born 1901 was Elizabeth-Duke Robertson Campbell and I'm wondering if this may be where the 'Duke' came from :?: :?:

Based on the children of your couple from the IGI
JAMES BUCHANAN Birth: 02 APR 1868 Tradeston, Glasgow
MARGARET BUCHANAN Birth: 07 MAR 1870 Calton, Glasgow
WILLIAM BUCHANAN Birth: 14 MAY 1866 Tradeston, Glasgow

I think this is the family in 1871 (not very well transcribed - on my data - Bushmann)
83 Bernard St Glasgow Calton Lanarkshire
William 24 head Farmer, Cotton Cloth ?? born Bairhead Renfrewshire
Mary Ann 28 wife born Ireland
William 4 son born Glasgow
James 3 son do
Margaret 12 mo dau do
Ref: Parish Glasgow Carlton, ED 63 Page 7 Registration No 644/3

In 1861 Mary is shown aged 16 (address listed as 18?) at Glasgow St James. she is a Cotton picker. Living with a few families including mother Margret aged 40 and brother Patrick aged 14.

As I have no skills in tracing folk in Ireland, I can add little more - it could be that Mother Margaret married more than once - causing the name confusion with Mary's husband.

Finding the death of Margret Hunt - who was living in Scotland in 1861 would perhaps help. Mary may be the informant for her death. I don't easily see Margaret in 1871, she may have died before this census - or remarried. There are a couple of marriages on the IGI for a Margaret Hunt between 1861 and 1871, although I would think that the name is relatively common.

1891 census gives Mary's place of birth in Ireland but you'd have to look at the original as it's transcribed as Benturlit.

:) Thanks Wilma, Trish1 and Nelmet

I have Margaret Hunt's death certificate 1874.

States Margaret Hunt nee Elliot - 1st husband William Hamilton widow (soldier) and second husband Thomas Hunt (engineer)? Informant was William Hamilton - son.
Margaret's parents are listed as James Elliot dec. and Catherine Elliot nee Reilly.
:? :? My confusion is the Hamilton / Hunt marriage does not seem to fit
or I am missing something

My great grandmother was Margaret Buchanan born 1870. Parents William Buchanan and Mary Ann Hunt and I confirmed this on her marriage certificate 1898 to Robert Campbell.

Thankyou all for your help but I think it's becoming toooooo hard for me

Some questions -

What was William's address when he registered his mother's death and where did she die? What age was given for Margaret?

Never give up we'll get there!!!! :D

Thanks Annette
I'll try and stay positive :)
Where son William signed the DC says (I think) Drypool Hall?
Margaret's address was 32 Well Street Glasgow. Age 70.
What I can't get my head around is Hamilton was her 1st husband and Hunt was the 2nd?

PS I think she died at home - Death Registered Calton.
I notice Well Stret Glasgow seems to come up a bit on the census of my ancestors (different numbers though!)

Now if that's the family Trish found in 1861 Margaret's age is way out! I don't have a problem though about her first husband being Hamilton.

Could you upload Mary's marriage and Margaret's death entries to the gallery?

Annette
