Annie Hosie Valentine?????

Post by poacher » Wed Jul 21, 2010 6:57 pm

Hi Folks,
started back on the family tree search after leaving it for a while.

One part of our family has the member Annie Hosie Valentine, born in Clayton St Glasgow in 1890.

Trying to go as far back as possible, therefore looking for info on;

Stewart Valentine (Annies father), Agnes Burnett (Nee Reekie)(annies mother), married on 12 July 1883 in the Calton in Glasgow.

Stewarts parents were; William Valentine (spirit merchant) & Annie Hosie, also a brother - William aged 15 on 1871 census, Stewart was 7 in 1871.

So far Ive had no luck with the Hosie/Valentine search or the list of merchants in Glasgow at the time.

Anyone have any pointers??

There is believed to be a brother to Annie Hosie Valentine who joined the Australian Army in 1915.

At a bit of a dead end now :-({|=

Hi poacher,

I haven't been able to find a Stewart Valentine on the 1871 census that matches the age that you gave, but I did find this family:

1861 Scotland Census 1861 Scotland Census
Name: William Valentine
Age: 40
Estimated birth year: abt 1821
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Ann
Gender: Male
Where born: Brechin, Forfarshire
Registration Number: 312
Registration district: Montrose
Civil parish: Montrose
County: Angus
Address: 105 Murray St
Occupation: Grocer & Spirit Dealer
ED: 1
Household schedule number: 67
Line: 20
Roll: CSSCT1861_45
Household Members: Name Age
William Valentine 40
Ann Valentine 39
Stewart Valentine 5
John Middleton 15
John Hosea 68

This has a Stewart Valentine born in 1856. John Hosea is Ann's father and John Middleton is stepson to William so probably Ann's son by a previous marriage. This is from Ancestry.

If you go on to search for this Stewart born 1856 in Montrose, Forfarshire, you can find him on the 1891 census married to an Agnes with children William, Helen and Annie who was born in Glasgow in 1890. William Jr. is only 6 years old so quite a bit younger than the age you gave. In 1891, Stewart and family are living at 4 Clayton St. in Glasgow Chalmers parish.

Might be raising more questions than I answered!

Carol :D

Edit: Oops! The William Jr. 6 years old is Stewarts son not his brother so the right age for joining the army in 1915.

Hi Carol,
I'm amazed

I presume your are subscribing to Ancestry??

I've been bugged to do my wife' side of the family but have been neglecting my side.

Have you ever heard of female births on Stornoway where the child would be called..................Stewart
It would appear that on my side there is a strange marriage between Stewart Murray(Murray/MacIver) & John McGaw.

Unfortunately the split then goes from Stornoway to Ireland.

Think I may have to sort out a subscription to Ancestry.

Time to work on my side I think, Looking to go as far back as possible.

Best regards
Dave

Hi Dave,

Yes, my sister and I split the cost of a subscription to Ancestry since we live in the USA and our grandparents came from Scotland and Finland.

I'm not familiar with Stornaway families, but I have a 3x great aunt named Robertson. There is discussion of this topic of male names given to female children on this forum from time to time. It isn't as unusual as you might think!

I don't know where you are located, but check with your library to see if it has a subscription to Ancestry available to members. Could save you some cash!

Free stuff is even better!

From the IGI on Family Search:

1. ISABELLA LOW VALENTINE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 18 AUG 1861 Montrose, Angus, Scotland

2. WILLIAM VALENTINE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 12 AUG 1863 Montrose, Angus, Scotland

3. ANN VALENTINE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 04 APR 1854 Montrose, Angus, Scotland

I searched William Valentine and Ann Hosea to get these. Ann's son John Middleton is there too. His father was William Middleton.

Carol :D

Edit: Stewart comes up with parents William Valentine and Ann Middleton.

Far from unusual in Scotland to find a girl given a male given name !

I've found so far;

Stewart Morrison Murray - Female, B 01/04/1872.

Forgot how addictive this was.

There's very little Irish info to be found though - free stuff anyway.

Hi Annette,
many thanks, should give me some info to work on, also gives me a good indication that Ellen McGaw wasn't born until after 1901.

I must be using different search terms as I couldn't find anything further.

Really appreciate your help.

Dave
