Post by garydevine1995 » Sun May 01, 2011 3:27 pm

i cant find the death certs for Robertson Hamil and Mary Hamil/McCormick. they are still alive for their daughters marriage in 1895 and they are in blantyre at the time. they are on the 1871 census with there two daughters jane 4 and mary 2. mary was born in Holytown in Bothwell and so was jane. they are in New Monkland in 1881 and there Robinson 40, Mary 40 both born ireland, jane 14, mary 12, Wm 10 all born bothwell, isabella 8 born in Old Monkland and maggie 4 born New Monkland. then they moved to blantyre after because in 1887 their daughter mary married in blantyre at 17. in 1891 they are then in blantyre. Robinson 48*, Mary 47*, Mary hamil mclaren 22(the daughter married at 17 is now a widow), William 19, Margaret 14, Elizabeth 9 and their grand daughter catherine mclaren 3. Robinson was bonr in County Armagh* and Mary was born in County Fermdrough*.

* = different ages and with the counties i cant make out :)

Hi Gary,

Mary's death certificate is there. It seem that the marriage certificate info was not all good. Mary died in Blantyre a few years before the wedding. As both surnames are open to different spellings, use wildcards in your search. Look for Mary Ham*, other surname M*corm*ck.

I don't see any sign of Robertson (or Robinson) Hamill's death on ScotlandsPeople. Plenty for Robertson as a middle name; mostly Hamilton surname results for Ham*. He could have returned to Ireland.

All the best,

AndrewP

A few minutes later...

Hi Gary,

Robertson Hamill's death is on ScotlandsPeople, but is mis-indexed as ROBETSTON Hamill ,in Blantyre a few years after his daughter's marriage. Seems he re-married after being widowed. There's another person for you to look up the info about.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi

Just found this forum, so reply is a bit after your initial post!

Robinson Hamill and wife Mary( don't know maiden name) we're both migrants from Ireland as you have already mentioned. They are two of my gg grandparents. They had a daughter I believe Elizabeth who married into the McCormack family namely Robert. Robert McCormack was the son of James McCormack and Mary( unknown maiden name) They were also from Ireland - the North I believe Fermanagh/Armagh.

Robert and Elizabeth had a son Robinson ( known as Ross) my grandfather. He had a son with Margaret Hardie in Blantyre called George, my father. My dad named my brother - Robinson!

So my fathers paternal ancestry were all from north of Ireland. He was very Scottish though and proud of it!

Hope this helps.

Calvin McCormack ( I was born and live in Somerset, ooh arr)

Good morning Calvmac and a warm [TS_welcome]

Gary, the original poster, was a teenager when he posted on the forum and of course is a young man now! With some luck, he will have kept his same email address and will get a notification of your post. It sounds like you two would have a lot of information to share.

Best wishes,

Sarah

If it helps folk, Jane Hammell’s birth is recorded on Scotlandspeople on 26.12.1867 in Bothwell. The certificate says that her parents married on 14.8.1861 in Paisley. That’s not correct so far as I can see. But there is a marriage between Robinson Hamel & Mary Jane McCornick (sic) in 1860 (Paisley Middle Church). GROS ref 573/3/55. Looks promising and should give parents details and whether they were alive at that date.

Probably worth explaining that Robertson and Robinson are completely interchangeable in Ireland, as are Kilpatrick and Kirkpatrick and many other similar sorts of names. So the varying spelling found in this family is something that is quite normal in Ireland anyway. (A bit like jail & gaol, Sarah & Sally, Henry & Harry if you follow me).
