Shaw Terrace, (25) Calibar Road, Barrhead

Post by david.herkes » Sat Feb 01, 2020 3:22 pm

My Great Grandfather shows as living in Shaw Terrace in the 1911 Census. The building is no longer there but I would be interested in any information regarding this property / area around that time.

Hi David [TS_welcome]

You don't mention your GGrandfather's name, but I think you'll find him on the Valuation Rolls on Scotland's people website.

I searched for Shaw Terrace in Renfrewshire for 1905 and got 13 results:
The owner of the addresses James MACCUBBIN and 12 tenants Some of the names are the same in 1915 and 1920 and indeed 1895.

The map shows a terrace of 3 buildings numbered 25 - so I'd hazard a guess that it's 3 closes of '4 in a block' houses ie 3 entrances each with 2 houses/flats on the ground floor and 2 on the upper floor - with an outside stair leading to the back garden perhaps. Possibly similar to number 56 - 60 that are still standing at the corner of Glen street

Looking at old maps gives a fair idea of the place:
https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=1 ... rs=170&b=1
Carlibar Road is a meandering street, which snakes along the North side of the 'valley' that cuts through the wee town.
Quite a hive of industry at various times
This 1951 map shows a Brass works and Pulley works as it's neighbours never mind a railway line cutting between Shaw Terrace and the 'posh' houses to the east.
If you are unfamiliar with the NLS maps - you can slide the blue button to show the modern map underneath. And you can choose from various old and new maps using the drop down menus.
The houses are on the 1896 map, and on air photos from 1944/50

I also searched google for "Shaw Terrace" Barrhead and it threw up some interesting things:
A Clarks Directory for 1896 has entries for Shaw Terrace Dunterlie.
Dunterlie seems to be the name for that wee pocket of Barrhead - the Football pitch is named Dunterlie Park.

Shaw Terrace is mentioned in this newspaper article from the Barrhead News -a James Carberry died after cleaning out drums previously containing Mustard gas - no date is given but he was on the valuation roll in 1905 but not 1915.

I hope this helps get you started.
Wilma

Thank you for taking the time to research this and for your comprehensive reply - it is very much appreciated.

Yes, I have copies of the Valuation Rolls - they moved to Shaw Terrace somewhere between 1905 and 1911 (they were previously in Dalry). The family name is Kilpatrick and the eldest male of each generation was traditionally called Hamilton. From the Valuation roll I had deduced the terrace as number 25 in terms of the sequence of the other addresses either side of it.

I also found an excellent set of aerial photos - https://canmore.org.uk/collection/1269729 and can see a building which I assume to be 'Shaw Terrace' (based on mapping the known roads and landmarks to the photo). It is in the top left of the photo.

I had seen the article on James Carberry a while ago and I also discovered a neighbor at no.23 Calibar Road was killed in action during WW1

Thanks again!

That is an excellent view of the town on camore.
it took me a while to figure it out.
I worked in and around the area, 30 years ago! and my father still lives in the vicinity but the town has changed drastically
with railway lines/bridges and factories going and new roads being put through, not to mention the housing boom.

I looked through the other photos - mainly Armitage Shanks factories [ where would we be without Messrs Armitage & Shanks!], but Shaw Terrace is always just out of shot or obscured.

There is a Historical Association for the area:
https://rlhf.info/local-history/associa ... sociation/
They may have more information.

The Barrhead News have been in operation for a long time https://www.barrheadnews.com Perhaps they will have archives that could help.
