Donald McDonald and Torquil MacQuarrie

Post by John Bird » Fri Jul 06, 2007 3:36 am

Hi

I am trying to find out the bithdate of Donald McDonald born on the Isle of Ulva or Mull about 1780-1784. He married Catherine MacQuarrie on
3 October 1826 at Oskamull Isle of Mull. In 1828 they moved to Isle of Gometra where they lived until Donald died about 1847 (from starvation?). They had 10 children. In 1852 Catherine and her 10 children emigrated from Gometra to Victoria Australia.

I would like to the birth date of Donald. In 1841 census he and his family were living at Balichloich on Gometra. His age was given as 55.

Catherine born in 1804 on the Isle of Ulva was the daughter of Torquil MacQuarrie and Marion McLean. They married in Oskamull in January 1792 and had 9 children. He was born about 1765-1770 probably on the Isle of Ulva. Marion died in Ardene Argyllshire in 1857. I would like to find Torquil's dates of birth and death. I could not find any reference to Torquil in the 1841 census although Marion was living at Balichloich.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. The story of Catherine bringing her children to Austrlia is very wll documented over her in Australia. I would like to trace her famiy back in history.

regards

John

Hi John,

Sorry I can't help you. I had a look on the BIVRI discs for your Donald McDonald's BC and there are about 12 Donald's born in Argylshire but none listed specifically on the Isle of Ulva or Mull. Can you hazard a guess of the parent’s names from the naming pattern of Donald and Catherine's children's names?

Regards,
Anne H

Torquil is a gaelic name and not that popular so should hopefully be easy to get a match

There is a submission for the family on LDS site

Yes, you would think it would be easy to get a match with a name like Torquil, but I'm afraid I'm not seeing anything on the BIVRI discs, or the IGI for that matter. Perhaps someone else will have better luck...sorry I can't help :(

Hi Anne and David

Thanks for your help.

Donald and Catherine had 10 children -2 boys Neil (sometimes spelt Niel) and Malcolm. The earliest named girls were Euphemia, Ann and Margaret. I am related via Malcolm who named his boys Donald and Niel. His only daughter was named Christina his youngest niece (to Donald and Catherine.)

regards

John

You won't find the death of Torquil McQuarrie as he died before 1841. Official registration of BDMs did not start until 1 Jan 1855

His wife Marion died 1857 ARDMORE Tobermory

The 1841 ages were rounded down to the nearest 5, so Donald should have been born no later than 1785/6.

Assuming Donald was baptised, there is only one candidate and that's Donald s/o John McDonald / Mary McQuarrie

MCDONALD Donald chr. 21 May 1780 Kilvikewen, Ulva, Kilninian and Kilmore

Note that this date is a christening/baptism. The OPRs rarely give a birth date due to these being Church records.

If this is the correct Donald, having a McQuarrie mother might mean a pre-marriage relationship between Donald / Catherine i.e. possible cousins.
