WW1 6th HLI Peter Robertson killed Palestine 1917

Post by Margaret » Fri Jun 22, 2012 12:37 am

I have just found a photo of Peter Robertson's grave in Palestine, with my Dad John Morton standing by it. These photos are in a photo album of my fathers which I have just recieved from my brother in New Zealand. I am putting this out in TS, in case there is a family member of Peter researching and would like a copy of this photo
cheers

Hello Margaret,

I’ll add a bit more as it will make your kind offer easier to find.

Peter Robertson, Highland Light Infantry, 241536.

Your photo would be of the grave in the Gaza War Cemetery. It looks like the War Graves Photographic Project has a photograph of the family grave in Glasgow. http://www.twgpp.org/information.php?id=2616798

Also, there’s a nice photograph at ScottishWarGraves. http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/s ... c-300.html

His death was reported in The Scotsman, 25 May, 1917, along with three other HLI soldiers.
H.L.I.—Hampton, 9445, D. (Glasgow); Johnstone, 22868, E. (Insch); M’Vea, 11472, Cpl. A. (Glasgow); Robertson, 241536, P. (Mount Vernon).

All the best,
Alan

Hello Allan
Many thanks for the information about Peter, from what I have found out he was one of my Dad's best friends. I didnt make myself clear in my first post so will edit it in a minute. The photo I have found is in my Dad's photo album which I have just recieved from my brother in New Zealand. So you see I have the photo actually two photos one of the grave and one of my Dad standing beside it. I would love to be able to share it with his family.
Thanks again for you help, I will go and have a look at the other sites now.
cheers

There is an important difference between the two projects. The WGPP will charge for a copy of that photograph. The SWGP can be copied for free.

My great Uncle was Peter Macneal who we knew died in Gazza but the family have absolutely no detail.
He had three siblings in Andrew Jessie, and Daisie, Peter was the youngest.
Interestingly I had not realised there had been three other children who died in infancy to Jessie and his father Peter, being another Andrew, William and George.
The family lived in Mount Vernon, with my Grandmother Jessie was buried in the family plot in 1966.
The Robertsons family business was A Robertson & Co of Springwell, the oldest manufacturers of soft drinks in the West of Scotland where Peter's father Peter Robertson managed the business, then Peters sibling Andrew, and then my father. Soft drinks in Glasgow are known affectionately as 'ginger' after the famous family brand, "five star auld scotch ginger beer".
My great uncle Peters sepia photo in his full uniform was always pride and place in my fathers office over his fireplace, and is now in my brothers possession.
I was named after him, but strangely we had no detail of his time in the war, or his untimely death at 20 years, nor is there any record on the War Commission records.
It is great to note your grand father John Morton as a good friend. It would be wonderful if we could have some insight to the short life of your grandfathers great friend.

Just for interest ....

Peter Robertson is listed on the Sandyhills Parish Church WW1 Memorial, see: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtop ... warmemscot

(Scottish War Memorials Project)

Commonwealth War Graves Commission: http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casua ... N,%20PETER

Scottish National War Memorial: http://www.snwm.org/content/roll-search ... b87&page=1

I can't find any service records, so they probably didn't survive

I have a copy of his Medal Index Card which shows 2 Regimental Numbers (both HLI) and they were 4066 and 241536 and that he was entitled to the British War and Victory Medal.

Anne :)
