Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Cane - tracing original owner

Post by WilmaM » Fri Nov 14, 2014 3:52 pm

My Grandfather served in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the First World War, he was taken prisoner and survived the war, but like most of his fellows - never ever spoke of his experiences.
I have his de-mob car, soldiers accounts card, and have downloaded his medal card and [joy of joys] some information about his imprisonment.

However he isn't the main subject here, but rather his Swagger Cane.

My Dad has it at home and recently he reunited the top and cane parts as the schools are heavily into the Great War History.

The cane is wooden and the top and tip are [ very battered] silver. Written on the wood is a name, not my Grandfather's.

Dad makes it out to be M. KINNIY presumably it's previous owner.
So being the nosy genealogist I tried to find who he may have been.

The nearest I can get to a name anything like that is on the Commonwealth Graves site [after clicking through hundreds of pages]
there is :
McKinley - Robert, Robert & W
or
McKinney - Alexander, William or D

Any bright ideas anyone?

Perhaps the regimental museum may be able to help:

They were my first port of call Elwyn - but they are so snowed-under with requests that they have suspended any further inquiries [8 months backlog to clear]

We assumed he was a casualty and his kit was reissued as Dad thinks the army razor also had another name on it.
