A short comment on Russell's very interesting and useful info on the Clyde steamers.As one Glaswegian who has gone doon the watter from the Broomielaw,I don't remember too many "jaded" folk. Self included.

To be honest David neither was I. although not a Glaswegian when I arrived here I worked shifts as a student nurse and it was a great way to spend an afternoon and evening floating serenely 'doon the watter' to foreign (to me anyway) ports like Rothesay. Of course in 1959/60 the ship yards were still in full production, Even today it is still more pleasurable to cross over to Dunoon on the ferry than make the long drive round.

I think I've finally figured out the situation. A fire at Stobcross Quay in 1903 destroyed the Anchor Line facilities there. The new Anchor Line Yorkhill Quay was not built until 1907-8. Therefore to board an Anchor Line ship between those years you would have taken the train from St. Enoch station to Greenock, where the ship would be anchored in the river.
