Hi everyone,

I have just returned from a wonderful trip to Scotland for research two whole weeks of Graveyards Churches and New register House Bliss.
I found out that in December 1920 Andrew McGowan born 9.4.1884 was in the merchant navy. Does anyone know how I go about getting his service records and any information re a death at sea.

Searching the National Archives for McGowan A bought back the above. The R no would be his discharge number - the year would be his discharge year. You may hit the jackpot with one of these !

You can also search the Medals Index . The main web address is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ and there is a huge amount of information on how to find records and gives a full explanation of what it all means. I still find this site confusing so if you end up going round in circles your not alone !
