Passenger Lists - lookup help request

Post by Ted » Sun Oct 16, 2005 9:11 am

Hi Everyone

Could some kind soul please help with a lookup on passengers lists to US between 1912 and 1914 for Espet (or Elsie or Elizabeth or Elspeth) Allan (MS Gordon) - she would have been 52 in 1912. She traveled to Barre in Vermont to her daughter Jane Burnett. I have contact with Jane Burnett's Granddaughter in US who gave me the information (confirmed from her father who is still alive) that Elspeth came to Barre before WW1 and worked as a nurse in Barre Hospital and then returned to Scotland around 1919. I have checked out Ellis Island site - no trace - but do not have access to other passenger list sites.

Elspeth Allan (MS Gordon) born 25 Feb 1860 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire. Her husband Robert Allan died in 1905. I know that in August 1912 she was living at 1 Farquhar Place, Aberdeen (I got this from the passenger list of SS Numidian leaving Glasgow on that date for Boston) - this was the next of kin address given by her daughter Jane Ross Gordon Burnett who was a passenger traveling to Barre, Vermont to join her husband Henry LG Burnett - she had her two children Henry & Mary traveling with her). Elspeth died in Aberdeen in 1922. It is possible, but not certain; that she may have traveled to US with either or both sons John Smith Allan b1891 in Aberdeen or William Allan b1895 in Aberdeen.

Hope someone can give me a clue.

Thanks lots

Ted

Hi Ted

I gave it my best shot but so far no sign of her in any of the immigration records. I've searched under various spellings of ALLAN and also GORDON. No sign of John or William either. I double checked the US 1920 Census and she's not in the household of her daughter in Barre nor anywhere in the same county. You probably know the US census details but in case not I could give you those if you wish. Perhaps the ships records just have not been added yet to the databases......I'm still waiting on a few of my own family that I know should be in Boston but are no where to be found. I'm ever hopeful that they will surface and are not lost forever!!

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Jean

I am truly grateful for your efforts. I am also following up some angles to check if Elspeth could have gone to US via Canada - never give up as we all say !!. However you may well be right that relevant lists might not be available yet.

I have the Burnett family on the 1930 US Cenus but I do not have any details of them on the 1920 Census - if you have access and could forward to me via PM I would be forever in your debt.

Thanks lots

Ted
