I think the street address was used to de-stigmatise the thought of being born or dying in an institution - although 'Hospital' Street kinda gives the game away!
Thanks Brian! Now that you mention it, I think I had read that somewhere but because of the 1919 date and the hospital being right there too, I wasn't sure.
Looks like they both died in the poorhouse, poor souls!

Hi Kate,
Nice to hear from you. It's unusual to find anyone researching the Harty's...have been concentrating on other areas myself for the longest time.
I'll send you a pm.
Regards,
Anne H

thomas harty and isabella mccann are in my family tree. Thomas died in monklands poorhouse. isabella also died in 69 hospital st but she may have died in the fever hospital which was at the back. later family members died in Coathill hospital (former poorhouse) and the stigma remains today for some older folk. I have older records and am in the process of doing the family tree. have reached the irish ancestors and have quite a lot of data

thomas harty is noted by helen his mother as being bron inireland. he records later as born inn scotland not likely that he didnt know hes irish but as an incomer he would have a better chance if jobs if he were scottish and as he came here as a baby it would be asy to be scottish. others in the family tree changed their name from Roe to Monroe as it sounded more scotish for the same reason and to blend in. helen McDonald married Patrick harty in 1857 a year after they arrived in scotland they already had children . she later married Andrew Tully as Patrick died at 35. she went on to have another son John who was McDonald at brith but changed to Harty later. His father is recorded as james Harty..
Thomas and his Twin? John were born in 1854 followed by Mary in 1857, twins patrick and Margaret in 1858 then Nancy Tully to her second husband, then John (mcDonald ) Harty. John died in 1857 aged 3. Mary died in 1856 at 19 in childbirth cant find the baby.Patrick and Margaret died in 1858 and 1859 Patrick was already dead.Thomas survived to be our ancestor.
Thomas had Patrick Thomas John James michael Andrew and Mary. My ancestor was John. he was pudller in the ironworks. he lost a leg in the war and later operated an electric crane with a very good artifical leg as it was supplied by the military. John had Thomas John Margaret isabella (after isabela mccann), Daniel Michael Bridget Hugh and Mary. My grandfather is Daniel who worked in Gartsherrie ironworks until it closed in teh 60's.

Thomas's father Patrick Hearty is buried in Old Monkland Cemetry, in the old part. We are planning to seek out the spot and mark with a headstone at some point. The cemetry is in the process of putting all the lairs online. so far no records of patrick but he is there. I am planning to take photographs for the family tree. thomas son John may also be therre but his wife bridget Roe is buried at Holytown

Hello sarah dippity and welcome to TalkingScot.
Thanks for getting in touch. It looks like you've done a fair bit of research there, and yes, we are from the same family.
You're grandfather Daniel was my Uncle Danny.
I'll send you a pm sometime later today and go over a few things.
Regards,
Anne H
