Hi folks
Sorry I'd lost the plot on this in the last couple of days.

We've had a houseful of family here celebrating my Mum's 90th birthday and I've just sneaked on here early, before anyone gets up, to download the pics. A wonderful time was had by all ....Polmont certainly bred them tough...hehehe...she had a whale of a time!!

Why do you suppose there were only even numbers in 1841? I wonder if the street was still being built?

I have written again to the Glasgow City council to see if they can help with the Lair number rather than the name, but don't hold out much hope, as surely they would have found it from the name in the first place if that Lair was in the name of Jeffrey.

There were three Windsor Terraces in Glasgow according to the PO Directory in 1852


Windsor Terrace (West), Queenstown or
Great Western road.
Windsor Terrace (East), St. George's rd. (possibly the one on the map)
Windsor Street, from New City road to
North Woodside road.

I am visiting Gorbals Cemetery this week and will have a look for the Jeffrey plot

Hello Davie,

Windsor Terrace (west) Great Western Road changed its name to Kirklee Terrace. The photograph on the virtuall Mitchell website is this one and not St. Georges Cross as stated. I have emailed the Mitchell to tell them of the error. It is also confirmed by the Glasgow Story website.

The other Windsor Terrace is still there off Maryhill Road although there is not much left.

I thought that row o' hooses wiz a bit posh furr Maryhill.
The residents certainly had a few bob in those days.
There was no sign of John Jeffrey on the 1863 PO directory

I have a printed extract from the census which doesn't state an enumeration district. It refers to the parish or district of Partick in the county of Lanark.

It gives the reference number 646.3/1871/22/268, and the census date 3rd April 1871. Is this information sufficient to identify the district?

My ancestors, James Reid (28) and Jane Forbes (20) are living there (as coachman and table-maid) in the household of William G. Mitchell (age 70), a landowner. James Reid's age was twenty-eight. I don't know why the smiley face has appeared instead of the 8!

Hello John,

In that case it is the 'West End' Windsor Terrace - The Posh One!
If you read Davie's post regarding the PO directory for 1852 you will see that a William G Mitchell lives at number 6.

You can see a photograph of it (and get a wee bit of the history) on www.theglasgowstory.co.uk and type Windsor Terrace in the images search box.

The row of houses still exist today known as Kirklee Terrace.

Hi Davie, my thoughts exactly re the houses.
Also thanks for looking on the 1863 PO directory but John Jeffrey (Junior) died in 1856. He was buried at the Southern Necropolis and I'm wondering if it's him buried in the Lair..not his father.

Glad to hear your family had a great time celebrating your mum's birthday!

Hopefully you have emailed - land@glasgow.gov.uk to inquire about the lair number.

I think this is a group of people trying to preserve what's left of the burying ground.

The thing that puzzles me most is why they would travel fron north to south. Was he born there?
