Hi Drew, joette and christine - thanks so much for your comments, I was aware that some building still stood in the original site, but had read that, as Drew said, it was no longer the same building, or used for the same purpose.

Drew that would be lovely if you get the chance. It did confuse me when the archivist wrote back as she did, but I was just so appreciative I eventually heard back and didn't want to be rude so I sent a thank you note rather than questioning it directly - perhaps I should have - I'm still learning the etiquette of all this :) One day I'll get over there and be able to see all this myself, I'm quite determined as my Grandmother Isabel was born/raised there and I'd love to see where she lived.

Thanks for your help, Lisa :)

Dumbarton Poorhouse & 1871 Census

Post by Alcluith » Sat Nov 26, 2005 12:39 pm

Lisa,

Dumbarton Library does have the records for the poorhouse from 1861-1954 but only the minutes of meetings up until 1897 and then they have information on the inmates.

The 1871 census does have details of inmates but nothing on John McFarlane, so he is not an inmate in 1871. There is no sign of John in the 1871 census for Dumbarton but I only looked around the High Street and close proximity so I could have missed him.

There is an Andrew McFarlane and family as follows:

Andrew McFarlane 33 Riveter Dumbarton
Agnes 33 Lanarkshire
Cordiella I 10 England
John A 7 Dumbarton
Helen 4 Dumbarton
William 3 Dumbarton

The naming pattern looked like your family with John & Helen, don't know if that helps.

I'm sorry but there was no record indexed for John at The Mitchell.

Kind regards,

Hi Drew and Annette - thank you both so much for taking your time to look into this for me, I truly appreciate your efforts!!

Drew - yes, that is Andrew's family (John's son) - my great-grandfather comes along about 7 years later. Well at least I'm not going batty in terms of not finding him in 1871 :) Must have been on a trip maybe. I'll get him one of these days. Thanks again to you both, Lisa

Lisa,

I am curious to why Cordiella was born in England, was it because she was Andrew's daughter from a previous wife?

Do you know any more details about John's daughter Helen did she marry locally? what was her married name? was John with her in 1871 census? John would have been 65yrs and still possible still working in 71 maybe in nearby Alexandria, Clydebank or Glasgow and moved near to his work rather than travel.

All in Dumbarton and could be the one family, this would certainly tie in your Andrew McFarlane and Isabella Sage as John's parents. If you can find any other middle names tying into ,say Jane's mother's surname.

Hope this helps

Hi Drew - Andrews daughter Cordelia-Jane was indeed born in England. Andrew McFarlane married Agnes Innes (1860) and shortly after they moved to England and can be found on the 1861 census in Northumberland. We can only speculate that maybe it was for work? They moved back to Dumbarton in time to have son John Andrew in 1864.

As for Helen, Andrews sister, IGI shows a Helen Mclachlan McFarlane born to a John McFarlan and Jane Davy (mis-spelling??) in 1840. I have yet to come across the McLachlan name in the family but doesn't mean it's not there. This person is not listed on SP as having married/died - but that is with a search of her full name - take the Mclachlan out and you've got lot's of Helens!

Thanks for the reference in your second message to the IGI's for McFarlane/Davie - I did have them referenced for future examination, but our local family history center is over 40 minutes away so getting there (with two young kids) is a bit of task. I think actually looking at the films is the way to determine if the mis-spelling is a transcription error with regards to Helen's entry. Sage is such a uniqe middle name that I'll likely try Isabella next to see if there is a link.

Thanks for your help! Lisa

Hello Lisa,

Maybe you already have Cordelia's birth details in England, but if not from the IGI:

Cordelia Jane McFarlane b. 16th May 1861 christened 23rd June 1861 St. Hildas, South Shields, Durham. Parents Adrew(sic) McFarlane and Agnes McFarlane.

Regards,

Alison
