Thought I'd give a quick update on this.

Jack has sent me a copy of the Poor Relief application for James Crichton which I received this morning. It's on three pages and is really quite informative. [woohoo]

Watch this space. :D

Wonderful, Mary! Isn't it sad how we all hope our relatives went to the poorhouse so we can read about it?  I wonder if there is as much information collected these days for folk on some sort of public assistance? Makes you wonder if we should be glad to lose our jobs for the sake of our descendants 8)

Sarah

Just to whet your appetites while I get all this 1901 Poor Relief Application info better composed...

Poor old James Crichton, 76 years old and senile, father of six living children, has lived in the same close for nearly 50 years. His wife, Margaret, aged 72, is currently cleaning the pubs belonging their long standing landlord in lieu of their £11 per year rent!

It even gives James' last employer's name and address and his last wages were 24/- per week.

One son is living in London but hasn't been heard of for 26 years (mind you they know he's got nine kids!)

One daughter lost her husband at sea three years before and is also on Poor Relief. Four children stated for her, but I have only ever known about my Grandmother and her younger sister, so a bit of further investigation to be done on that!

There are notes about the sons being pressured to contribute to their parents living and later note about prosecution for failure to do so!

Apart from the son in London, the addresses of their children are given and, where known, their income and/or rent!

It's an absolute mine of information! Because of it I have found the "London" son in West Ham on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 English censuses.

I want to tell you of the great efforts Jack has gone to, and is still going to for me. He's a star. He's being a great help.

By the way, I know some of the stuff I've now discovered is really quite heartbreaking, so if the moderators feel anything should not be disclosed, I'll welcome their advice. Having said that, all these folk are long gone and I see this as being of really historical value.

Right now I'm like a kid in a sweetie shop [many-greens] and the [kettle] is suffering from all-nighter exhaustion!

Mary

If all the folk are dead and gone long ago feel free to post anything you want. People really appreciate knowing the kind of information that can be found if you are very lucky.

Congrats on getting all that on your own rellies. I'm not surprised you're so happy and so grateful to Jack.

OK! So I had a rethink!

The underlying / parallel goings on that relate to this are quite complicated so, I thought it might be good to let you all see the actual document itself. I would like to "comment" some of the entries with things I've found out since and stuff I already knew, but any questions (and suggestions / observations) about the contents would be welcomed.

As soon as admin clear the three pages I finally managed to upload, have a read. It makes for interesting reading!

Cool!!! I can hardly wait! Always wanted to have a look at one of those, but my rellies were all gone from Scotland by the time they started taking down all those important (to us!) details for entry in the poor house.

So, if you don't mind, I'll enjoy yours! :D

Regards,
Sarah

Thanks Lesley :D

I hope everyone finds it as interesting as I have, and still am. One or two things I'm still researching, but it has explained a lot of things as well.

Bit of an update about James and Margaret's son, Thomas. He's the one living in London and "not heard from in 26 years".

Well, I found him! In 1881 he and his Canadian wife, Martha, are living in West Ham, London with one infant daughter, Helen. Thomas is shown as born in Scotland, as is Helen. Martha born in "Ammsin" Canada (Canadian members? Help?)

In 1891, same area, there are now 6 children, the youngest, not yet named, only 4 days old. Most of the names are typical Crichton family names.

1901 and they've moved house, but still in West Ham. The two oldest daughters aren't there but the other five children are, the unnamed one is now William. There are also two more children, making a total of nine, as it says in the PRA. The youngest is only 5 years old.

By the way, Martha is now said to have been born in Canada West!

Gotta ask yourself - If Thomas hasn't been heard from in 26 years, how could they quote 9 kids in 1903?

Hi Mary:

I've had a look at the Canadian Atlas and Gazeteer of current and former place names in Canada, but not able to find "Ammsin".

Canada West was designated in 1841 and refers to the area mostly known now as Ontario.

I tried using wildcards in the place name, but still came up empty handed.

Is "Ammsin" in script that could be read as something else?

Hi Frances,

Yes, it's handwritten and could be just my interpretation. I will give a try to upload it, but I might be over my space limit.
