Having defended the House of Commons :( it is time to return to the real world.

Anyone who aspires to high position in politics should automatically be barred from standing for election.

I don't like them much either!

That is the benefit of a democracy
you get the government you deserve.

I don't know who said it but it is very true, who voted them in, maybe before the next election everyone should check the candidates backgrounds.

Billy Connolly has a neat way of putting it - "The desire to be a politician should automatically exclude anyone from being one!"

Never a truer word spoken...! :D lol

Hi all

I have a bit of a problem with being too interested in the past misdemeanours of the great and good or not so good. After all how many of us have never messed up???? There are a few stories that some friends and acquaintances could tell that would make me

Though I sometimes find politicians depressing, particularly their homogenous nature nowadays, addiction to soundbites and inability to see beyond the next opinion poll, at least they are willing to put their heads above the parapet.

It's easy to subscribe to the "Something should be done about it" school of thought and not so easy to get out and do something about it ourselves. Maybe all those who feel that our societies need something different should make sure we do something to change things. I'm sure many do already. So let's get in among it and vote, volunteer, sit on the Children's Panel, stand for election for whatever party takes your fancy, join the community council...................................

As a late gentleman with more than a few skellingtons in his own cupboard memorably said "Ask not what your country can do for you etc.."

I tried "getting out and doing something about it" Anne, but finally realised that it was like trying to herd cats!

What can you do when the "popular member" because of his "good works" and "social influence" (for that read: "always ready to buy you a drink") keeps being selected to stand for election when the one guy who could actually have done something kept getting knocked back?

Fact is, there just aren't enough "get out and do somethingers" around to counter the easily influenced!
