I would have thought the informant would have been an official at the Poorhouse. One more thing to puzzle over.
Hi Sheila,
Any chance that the informant was the Governor's clerk?
I've seen that a few times.

Hi Sheila and Jack

I have an entry in the Burials in Paisley Graveyard where the deceased was an inmate of the Poor house. The informant was another inmate and her occupatin was given.
I know that deaths in the Govan Poorhouse (Merryflats) were often registered by other residents. They were not all infirm, only impoverished but still capable of carrying out this sort of task. Staffing was at a premium in the institutions and inmates were expected to carry out a wide range of responsibilities if they expected to be fed !
Since many of the residents were 'wandered', staff probably concentrated on dealing with them. I know that this had to happen quite a bit in psychiatric care even into the 1950's and 60's.

Hi Russell & Jack

Jack, you were right again. I had another look. It was the Governor's clerk, not the grocer's clerk. I feel so embarrassed. I was wondering how a grocer's clerk would have all the correct information of my GGrandfather to put on the Death Cert.

I think that I had better go over all my certificates and give them another look. I might have been wrong or missed something else on them.

Regards
Sheila
