This is great :)
I see that Mary has her mothers maiden name Pinkerton, and not her fathers name, Aitken, did they not marry? and were in America did Eliz and Matthew go to?

Hello thomsos,

I also noted that Mary seemed to be named after her mother.
I'm afraid this is as far as I went with this family and do not know where Eliza went to in America.

Here are Mary and William in 1841 courtesy of FREECEN.

Fairlie

Post by nelmit » Sat Oct 14, 2006 7:03 pm

Hello again thomsos,

I know you are having problems pinpointing William Fairlie/Fairley's death so I had another look at the poorhouse applications again today.

I found one for William Fairlie junior as follows -

Date of Application - 16.11.99

Age 60, single, weaver.

Parents - William, weaver died 9 years ago in City Poorhouse (I cannot find this in records but there seems to be some sort of omission) and Mary Pinkerton died in City Poorhouse 2.4.95.

Cohabited for 12 years with Margaret Anderson, widow James Galloway, till 4 years ago - she now lives at McKechnie St Calton.
Child Margaret 16 born Ferguslie, Paisley - a waitress resides with mother.

Sister Annie, widow Robert Newlands, 41 Sydney Stret was on Barony Roll and had relief. Admits to having been occassionaly drunk. Speaks at rate of about a word a minute.

Died 26/2/13

I had another look at Mary Pinkerton's and although it is a lot longer than I've transcribed I think I have covered all the main points.

There is a bit where William senior was admitted to the poorhouse in January 1889 but he left on 5th February 1891. So really you are no further forward as it looks as though William junior is a bit out on how many years it has been since his father's death.

Although, I've just a search on SP and there is a William Fairlie death in Lanarkshire in 1891. I wonder if this could be him and there was just a mix up in Mary's details.

Anyway hope this helps rather than confuses.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hello thomsos,

26/2/13 is the date of William jnr's death. I'm afraid my shorthand isn't too clear sometimes.

And yes I would agree that Annie is the Mary Ann born 1857 although she seems to have shaved a couple of years off her age in 1881 -

If you live in Glasgow it's worth going to 'The Mitchell' and viewing these records.

My friend is descended from Grace, who married John Armstrong in 1862.

Any questions just ask.

Annette,
as you know I am doing some work on this family, if you remember at the time this was posted, we comented on the names of Mary's parents, well I have just downloaded her dc 1895, and it has her parents as James Pinkerton and Margaret Flannigan, so I was wondering if you can shed any light on the James Aiken that was mentioned in her poorhouse application
