Shoe Lane, Greyfriars, Ab

Post by ficam » Sun Oct 05, 2008 11:29 pm

Some of my relatives were to be found in the 1841 census , in Shoe Lane, Greyfriars , Aberdeen, with many other people. Does anyone know if this was some kind of institution?

They were travellers so it may have just been some kind of very large boarding house as they were both in their 20s and noted their occupation as spoonmaker.

Thanks

Hello Ficam,

I had a quick look in the 19th Century British Newspapers (currently available as a freebie) and there was nothing to indicate there was any sort of an institution in Shoe Lane in 1841.

If you search for Shoe Lane in the street field of 1841 FreeCen http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl and click on one of the Greyfriars results you can do a house by house journey up the street and get an idea of the type of people living there.

The odd household looks rather crowded with seemingly unrelated people, such as the one where John Blossom lives with a whole lot of non-locals. But then he’s a Publican so maybe that means something. I imagine an institution or boarding house or similar would have someone there in charge.

Hope this helps,
Alan

Hi Ficam,

In the 1851 census, there were two institutions listed:

The Boys and Girls Hospitals of Aberdeen
St Nicholas Poorhouse, Aberdeen

Given that they were of adult age, the hospitals should be out of the frame. So they may have been in the Poorhouse. On ScotlandsPeople, on that 1841 census entry, go to the free header and see if it gives details of the enumeration district, naming an institution - the poorhouse, or somewhere else.

All the best,

AndrewP

Shoe Lane still exists in Aberdeen, AB10 1AL will find it for you.

It's beside the Marchial College, and 'googling' indicates there was a Franciscian Friary in the area at some stage in history.....

Looking at an old map of the area :
http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/aberdeen.html
South East section
maps LXXV. 11.9 and LXXV.11.14

Shows it to be an L shaped lane with several buildings on it, but nothing to indicate anything out of the ordinary dwelling houses on it.

Those particular plans are very good at such detail, as classrooms and offices of the college and nearby Prison and Barracks are all neatly noted.
