I have a 1913 DC where place of death is Old Monkland Poorhouse then a 'former residence' in Coatbridge. I also have a 1919 DC where place of death is 69 Hospital Street, again with a 'former residence' in Coatbridge.
I'm not finding an actual address for the poorhouse when I 'google'. Does anyone know if 69 Hospital Street at that time would actually have been the poorhouse?
Regards,
Anne H

Best wishesOld Monkland, situated to the east of Glasgow, erected a parish poorhouse at the south of what is now School Road. The site location and layout are shown on the 1912 map below.
Old Monkland site, 1912
The 1914 map shows a large and complex collection of buildings. What appears to be an entrance block at the east facing onto Hospital Street no longer exists. To its rear, the main block bears the date of 1874.

Hi Lesley,
I should have mentioned that I did have a look at that site and decided it probably was one and the same...but not certain, since it was also the site of the hospital which I think would be Coathill Hospital now.
How I wish there were poorhouse records for Old Monkland...but as far as I know, there isn't!

Anne H

Hi Annette,
That would be wonderful, thanks for the offer!
1. Thomas Harty, 64, pauper (formerly a puddler) died 8 July 1913 in Old Monkland Poorhouse - informant J.A. Logan, Ass't Governor.
2. His widow, Isabella Harty ms McCann, 67, died 4 Oct 1919 at 69 Hospital Street - informant, Thomas Harty, son.
If you need any further information, just let me know.
As far as I can tell, we seem to be the only Harty/Hearty family in the area since at least the 1851 census, so any with the name Hearty/Harty, especially with an ms Helen McDonald in the Coatbridge/Old Monkland area is likely to be mine.
Keeping my fingers crossed there might be something there when you get the chance.
Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne,
I was in the local studies room in Airdrie Library a couple of months ago looking for a location for a Model Lodging House - the person I initially spoke to thought i meant the poorhouse and they confirmed that this was in Hospital Street.
I think the street address was used to de-stigmatise the thought of being born or dying in an institution - although 'Hospital' Street kinda gives the game away! It happened until fairly recently - my father in law was recorded as being born at "xxx Govan Road" - the Southern General!
Best wishes
Brian
