mccallum/smylum orphanage

does any one know of three brothers who were admitted to smylum around 1879,patrick henry andcharles,these boys were all deaf mute,it seems they were only there a few years ,put there after the death of their father,who was charles mcallum,at the time of being admitted they lived in denny stirling,duker

Not very sure what you want to learn about them duker as I'm sure you have them on census records and know about their parents by your description.

Have you seen the story of Henry and wife at Ancestry?

In 1881 it looks like the family living at Bridgend, Denny as there is a Patrick 4yrs, Henry 10yrs, scholar and Charles 17yrs, road labourer, living with Mum, M McCullum. The other children are John 23 yrs, road labourer; Mary 19yrs unemployed mill worker; Elizabeth 15yrs, mill worker and Margaret 2yrs. Margaret and Patrick were born in Denny and the others were born Ireland.
They can't have been in the asylum for long.

Henry is in the asylum in 1881 and Patrick is there in 1891. The 10 year old at Denny in 1881 is their sister.

According to the person at Ancestry the mother died in 1883 at Denny and Henry married Mary Ann Gaffney. There is such a marriage in 1901 at Old Monkland.

The original of this would need to be checked at SP but in 1891 there is this family at Carluke. Ages are out but a check at SP should show if this Henry was deaf.

Did you know that Smyllum orphanage was run by the Roman Catholic Church! I found Roberto Belli there in the 1881 census. I contacted sisterjoandc_AT_hotmail.com, unfortunately there are no records before 1906.

You can find info about this orphanage on the internet. Didn't seem a very nice place.

thank you helen,i also found one of my mcallums there in 1881,there is a letter found when he died with a reply stating there were no recordsthat was way back,seems like he was looking information about himself and his brothers,i also had a look at smylum,agree not a nice place,looks like we both had someone there at the same time,yvonne
