Smithston Asylum Records.....

Post by marilyn morning » Sun Aug 14, 2005 4:38 am

Thomas Morning d. 7 June 1879 at the Smithston Asylum, Greenock
on his death cert there are no parents or a wife's names listed. Just lines drawn through the space. I've posted a copy of the death cert. in the gallery ( I hope it posted correctly? Hit back button by mistake  )

Are the records for the Smithston available? And if so, where?

Regards
Marilyn

The IGI only knows of two THOMAS MORNING marriages in Scotland.

16-Nov-1869 Hutchesonstown, Glasgow to MARTHA FISHER
17-Jul-1873 Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew to MARY McDONALD

At age 42 in 1879, it is unlikely that he was married before 1855.

All you can do is search for the deaths of these two wives, and see if there are enough clues to eliminate one or both of these marriages from that Thomas Morning.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Marilyn and Andrew,

The Thomas MORNING/Mary MACDONALD mariage is one of mine. They had at least two children and he was still working as an iron moulder after 1879.

All the best

Hello Ina, Catriona and AndrewP

Thank you for all this additional information. Knew there were two Thomas Morning. Catriona would you mind posting the details of the marriage of Thomas Morning and Mary McDonald? These are the facts I have this far.

1. 14 April 1858 Thomas Morrow or Moran (believe it should be Morning)
listed as a chimney sweep married Mary Gallagher. His parents are
listed as John Morrow and Janet McLachlan. (my gggg grandparents
are John Morning and Janet McLachlan)

2. 23 December 1865 a son, Dugald Morning was born, parents were
Thomas Morning, Chimney Sweet and Mary Gallagher

3. listed in the 1871 census is Mary Morning along with her children;
William, John, Thomas, Henry and Patrick. Plus a friend, Patrick
Docherty (whom she later marries)

4. 7 June 1879 Thomas Morning passed away (a copy posted in the
gallery)

5. 10 January 1906 Mary Docherty passed away listing Thomas Morning
as her first husband and Patrick Docherty as her second husband.

Now mixed in my records is a David Morning son of Thomas Morning and Elisabeth Mathieson. Thomas is listed as a coal miner. Perhaps your family Catriona?

Marilyn

Hello Catriona

I agree its confusing with both Thomas Mornings being married to women by the name of Mary. 17 July 1873 marriage of Thomas Morning to Mary McDonald, I have his mother listed as Elizabeth Morning, Ms. Mathieson?

Remember May Morning being a witness at your Annie Sloan's wedding 25 June 1925? Well May showed up in another document I've obtained. May is the sister of Thomas Morning, and lived at 11 Hill Street Greenock in 1896. Their parents are Thomas Morning and Mary Ann Gallagher. Small world

Hi Marilyn

Not the same May MORNING, I'm afraid. May, the "bridesmaid", was born in 1908 to William MORNING and Janet BLAIR. m.1907. The wedding was that of her half brother, William Swan GOULD who married Annie SLOAN in 1925.

My head is spinning!!!!!!

Have a good day
Catriona
