Post by Caroline » Tue Oct 11, 2005 11:57 am

One of my relatives died in Glasgow City Poorhouse in 1878 and another one died in Dumbarton Combination Poorhouse in 1897

Does anyone know where I could access their records

Hi Caroline,

You can access these records at The Mitchell library in Glasgow.

Visit GCCarchive to see what they have.

I don't mind looking next time I am there if you don't live in or around Glasgow.

Regards,
Annette M

Poorhouse records

Post by Alison Plenderleith » Tue Oct 11, 2005 2:38 pm

Hello Annette,

I've just this morning discovered my ggggrandmother died in the Glasgow City Poorhouse in 1870.

I know this is rather cheeky of me as your offer was made to Caroline but I would be really grateful if you could have a look at the Mitchell for me if you get a chance, as I am not likely to be able to get to Glasgow for a good while yet.

Her name is Ann Cunningham m.s. Riddell. She died 2nd November 1870.
She was 69.

Many thanks,

Alison

Are you certain that the Dumbarton Combination records are at The Mitchell?

David,

According to the website they are.
I've never looked for Dumbarton before but I have found (by accident) records from Hamilton.

Dumbarton does have some books that I have seen, but it is more a list of names.

That's why I was suprised as I'd never previously heard of extant inspectors' reports for the Dumbarton Combination. That's not to say that there aren't such, somewhere, - there are still regular reports of amazing material being found deep in cellars and way up in the lofts. It's only a few years ago when the records for the Mauchline and surrounding area "surfaced".

But don't hold out any hope for the Edinburgh records. They are known to have been incinerated, and if anything had survived for Dundee and Aberdeen you'd think it would have been found by now.

I contacted the Mitchell and Dumbarton library to see if there were any records to save Annette hunting for something that didn't exist. The Mitchell hasn't got back to me ,but Dumbarton library say they have got admission lists for the Dumbarton Combination Poorhouse from 1897 to 1904 and they've offered to look them up for me!

So that's one less job for you Annette but I'd be greatful if you could still look up the Glasgow City one.

Hello Caroline,

The Mitchell can be a wee bit slow to reply by email sometimes.

I hope to visit The Mitchell tomorrow or Saturday so if you post the name (+ maiden if a married woman) along with the year and place of birth I'll have a look.

Annette M

Hi Annette,

My relatives name is Richard Nicholson and he was born in Ireland.
He died at the Poorhouse on the 4th January 1878 aged 58.

Let me know if you need anymore info and I hope this doesn't take up too much of your time tomorrow.

Thanks

Caroline
