IS THIS MY GGGRANNIE IN THE POORHOUSE?.....

Post by sheilajim » Sat Oct 29, 2005 2:17 am

Hi Everyone.

I hope that I make sense on this post. I went to see the Doctor today. He told me I had a fever and bronchitis. Hope I spelled that right.

I was looking for one of my GGGrrannies on the 1861 Census. Her name was Margaret Key or Kay, McDonald. She died in Nov 1862. On the Death Cert. it says married to John McDonald. Her son-in-law Robert Scott was the informant. His address is given as 38 Lower Bridge St. Stirling. Her address is given as 52 Lower Bridge St. Stirling. The death was registered at Parish of Stirling, Burgh of Stirling.

in 1867 her son John Dunn McDonald married Letitia Morin. On the marriage certificate Margaret Key McDonald is listed as deceased, her husband another John Dunn McDonald is not listed as deceased.

My problem is this. On the 1861 Census for Stirling, I could find only 2 Margaret McDonalds. One is clearly not her. :o The other Margaret McDonald is listed in the Poorhouse of Stirling. I think that she is also listed as a widow. How do I find out if this is her? And what happened to hubby if it is her?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks :)
Sheila

Hello Sheila,

I did a search for a M* M*cdonald in Stirling, Stirling.
There are only 23 results. I don't know what age your Margaret would be but there is a Margret aged 59 on the list. Could this be her?

Hope you're feeling better this morning.

Regards,

Hi Annette

My Margaret McDonald's age on her Death Cert is 60 in 1862, so the age is right for Margret McDonald. She is also listed as being born in Denny, and I know that the family spent some years there. What bothers me about MARGRET is that on the census for 1861, she is listed as HEAD with a 17 yr old daughter named Christine. I have only found a definite 2 children born to my Margaret Kay/Key McDonald and John Dunn McDonald. Also what happened to hubby? :? I am keeping this MARGRET as a possibility.

Thanks for your help. :)
Sheila
