re Poorhouse Records Aberdeen.....

Post by joette » Thu Nov 17, 2005 2:32 pm

I am trying to track the parentage of my 4xGreatGrandfather.This line has so easy to track I did it in just a couple of days! Now is this because they were all long lived & survived until Stat.Reg with an unusual name yes.
Anyway I found an enrty in the 1861 Census in St Clements for William McKimmie aged 84.He gives place of Birth as Botriphinie,Aberdeen which ties in with his place of Marriage. He gives occupation as Ret.Labourer.
Great be able to find his parents on his Death Certificate.NO.The only Death of a William McKimmie between 1861-1915(I was desperate!!) is in 1861 in St.Nicholas Aberdeen,St.Nicholas PoorHouse. No Parents,no name of late wife just widower of...Gives age 86 & occupation seller of firewood.
So two Questions is this the right man,if not where the heck is his Death?
If it is him are there any records for St.Nicholas & how do I find them :?
I am surprised as he had a large family but my3xGreatgrandfather was already dead so maybe all the children were.

Joette

As far as I'm aware there are, sadly, no extant poor relief records for the City of Aberdeen .........

Thanks for that David I just knew that would be the case.Sad person that I am I have being looking forward to having an Ancestor in the Poor House as it gives so much info not avaible elsewhere. I have read the transcripts of the Glasgow ones with interest.
Oh well there must be somewhere else to look thought it was all too easy.

Hi Joette.

Have you seen the IGI (familysearch.com) entry for the Christening of William McKimmie, 29 Oct 1776 in Botriphnie (actually in Banffshire)? Lists parents as William McKimmie & Isabel Dollas. There's also John & James in 1773 & 1778.

Any other Dollas / Dallas surnames cropping up anywhere in your research?

Cheers,

Darren

No I hadnt seen that I have stopped as to his parents as I had no idea where when he was born..The names William,James,Isabella are carried on through the generations & Botriphinie is where his son was born & married.
Are you connected to the Dollas/Dallas's? This is the first time I have seen these names but I am pretty confident this is the right connection.
So this means he didnt die forgotten in the PoorHouse but I cant find him on Statutory Reg so presume he died before 1855.Pity I was hoping he was the one on the 1861 Census. They were a pretty long lived bunch so I wouldnt have been surprised.

Hi Joette.

No, I'm not related, just thought it might be a useful line of research for you.

I don't think this necessarily means that the poorhouse death is not your one. I have several in my tree similar, just that there was no-one on hand to supply the details.

Cheers,

Darren

Hi Joette

Just stumbled across this topic.

I have an a relative in the Old Machar , Poorhouse she is under her maiden name in 1861 cenusus and on her death in 1869.

Have you tried searching with wild cards because if he had no relatives around to register the death then it could have been mis spelt?

Try "M*k*m*"

Thanks for that & he was mine. His brother also made it to Stat,Reg & luckily his parents were identified.
I have searched through the OPR for Bortriphinie(no other Wm McKimmies born at that time) & as the William in the 1861 Census gives birthplace of same & the 1861 Death has him interred in the Graveyard there, ages fit so I am happy to claim him as mine.
This line are I'm happy to say a pretty long-lived lot.Good genes to inherit.

My Mackie from Aberdeen and Langs from Campbeltown are a long lived lot in the main and easy to trace but my Browns and Stewarts sem to like dying early and moving to big city and using common names( how dare they!!!)

Glad it was a success and you found your man :D

Ditto my Brown's-from Craigie &Muirkirk-do you think there could be a connection??
My James Brown was the son of James Brown -Toll-House Keeper.(c1780)&Agnes Mclure. They were all(???) I think born Craigie.James Junior became a miner & lived Muirkirk where he married Mary Ann Gault. She had the sense to live to a ripe old age & apply for Poor Relief & provide the names,birth-places& occupation of her in-laws.Pity she didn't know whether she was born Muirkirk or Ireland!!
