Hi all,
Can someone please look to see if there is anything in the Mitchell records of Campbelltown, Argyll Poorhouse for Jane McLaughlin, died December 1889 aged 79, pauper and widow of Michael McLaughlin. Father appears to be Daniel, and mother Sarah Quin.
I am hoping beyond hope that this will smash one of my brick walls!
Thanks for reading,
Nina

Hi Nina
As far as I am aware there are no records for Argyll poorhouse held at the Mitchell
This is an article on the poorhouse.... it has a link to Argyll and Bute Council Archives who hold some records.

Hi Nina
I hope you have some luck with that. I know that the records of the Lochgilphead Poorhouse no longer exist but you might be better off with Campbeltown. The archivist in Argyll is a very kind and helpful chap but unfortunately retiring soon. The scary thing is that there was a proposal not to fill the vacancy which led to an outcry and now there will be a part-time post. Shows what low priority can be given to preserving the local heritage.

Thanks for that Anne I was just about to write for the Lochgilphead ones. We are so well served here in Ayrshire it's hard to imagine what Argyll Council are thinking of considering the amount of people who have their roots in Argyll.
