St Rollox?.....

Post by Miss Poohs » Sat Jun 17, 2006 11:38 am

I've found a relative - a wee girl aged 10, who ended up as an "inmate" in what looks to me like a list of children names in some sort of home, on the 1901 census.

There's no institution name on the sheet that I can see - only clue is, that the search has came up on ScotlandPeople as under the district of St Rollox, in the city of Glasgow/Lanark.

Does anyone know of such a childrens home/poor house?

I checked the records on the Ayrshire roots site, but she isn't there.

Hi there,

I had this same problem with one of my census pages. Go to the census again on SP and look for the button just above the image which says 'View Free Header" or something like that. It's free, and it may have more than one page to look at. It will hopefully tell you a bit more.

Hi Miss Poohs,

On the SP page where you selected to view or download the image, there should also be a button marked "view free header". That should show you the front page of that Enumeration Book. You may have to click on the button "view page after" to find the one with the description of the area or institution enumerated. All going well, you should find the name of the institution - and at no extra cost. :D

All the best,

AnrdewP

Thanks for that

Kate was in the city poorhouse - 322 Parliamentary Road, Townhead, Glasgow.

Other family members were split up between the family, I've no idea what happened to mum and dad.

They are together on the 1891 cencus, also taking care of 1 niece and 2 nephews, can't find them after that.

Hopefully you'll see this before I leave.

I'm going tho The Mitchell in about 15 minutes if you want to post her name, birth year and place I'll have look at the application if it's there.

Ohh pooh I've missed you!!!

Her name was Kate Hislop, on the 1901 census she was 11.

Hope you had a fruitful day Annette - I can feel a trip to Park Circus and the Mitchell looming.

The school holidays start at the end of this month, so hopefully I'll get a couple of days to myself then. Pete can entertain Andrew and I'll get a rummage through some old documents :) .

Very kind of you to offer, thank you.

When I get the chance to head to the Mitchell - will I be able to find out what happened to Kate?

I mean will they be able to tell me when she left - or if she went to live somewhere else?

You won't know what information the application may have till you see it.
Hopefully it will tell you all you want to know but don't pin your hopes on it.
That's if they have one indexed. If I'm there again before the holiday I'll have a look.

Kind regards,
Annette M
