I am interested to know how I can look at records for these places. I have a few ancestors who were in the Inveresk poorhouse and was wondering how do I go about looking for poor relief applications?
The other question relates to a Mary Hill Robb. In the 1881 census she is at home with her husband but is classed as a lunatic and she also appears to be at the insane asylum. In the asylum she is down as Mary Hill OR Robb. Is it possible that they are both the same person and is there a way to check?

Hi Pandabean
I suspect that Inveresk records will no longer exist. Edinburgh area poorhouse records were destroyed and I suspect Inveresk would fall within this area. http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ ... resk.shtml
I have no direct experience of Stirling Asylum but would suggest you contact Stirling Archives as they may know about them. http://www.stirling.gov.uk/archives
I suspect your Mary Hill Robb grew up as Mary Hill & married a Robb - that would explain her being referred to as Mary Hill or Robb. I've certainly seen some of my lot in the census use their maiden surname in a way which makes it look, to our eyes, like a middle name. Again, this pattern would fit.
Best wishes
