Malcolm Peters - Criminal Past ?.....

Post by darylrodger » Sat Aug 05, 2006 9:50 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can find details of my hubby's ancestor,
Malcolm Peters, born 14th July 1860; & died 1930 in Paisley. According to family lore he is supposed to have committed a murder. Where do I start ? Do I start with prison records ?

I would really appreciate any advice !

If you search for Malcolm Peters on the NAS catalogue there are entries for his precognition and trial in 1902.

Malcolm Peters is given as age 42, blacksmith, Address: Cambuslang, Native of Blantyre. The victim as Alexander Whyte, shop, Main Street, Cambuslang

With the references you should be able to obtain the papers.

From The Scotsman 14th July 1902
The Cambuslang Shooting Affair – Fatal Result - Mr Alexander Whyte, licensed grocer, Main Street, Cambuslang. died on Friday Bight in the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow, just twenty-four hours after being, as alleged, shot in his shop by Malcolm Peters, blacksmith. On the day of the tragedy Peters was in Glasgow, and he returned shortly after five o'clock to the smithy. At half past six o'clock in the evening, it is said, he walked into Mr Whyte's shop with a six-chambered revolver, and, it is alleged, shot Mr Whyte in the neck. Peters at first, when followed by a constable, is stated to have cocked the revolver, but ultimately dropped it on the pavement with the remark that it had served its purpose. The victim of the tragedy is survived by a widow and four children. On the instruction of the Procurator-Fiscal of Hamilton, a post-mortem examination of the body of Mr Whyte has been made, and the expectation is that Peters, who is in custody in connection with the affair, will be charged with the capital offence.

There is a much longer report on the trial in the edition of 4th September – Peters was found guilty but insane at time.
