The Cambuslang Shooting Affair – Fatal Result - Mr Alexander Whyte, licensed grocer, Main Street, Cambuslang. died on Friday Bight in the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow, just twenty-four hours after being, as alleged, shot in his shop by Malcolm Peters, blacksmith. On the day of the tragedy Peters was in Glasgow, and he returned shortly after five o'clock to the smithy. At half past six o'clock in the evening, it is said, he walked into Mr Whyte's shop with a six-chambered revolver, and, it is alleged, shot Mr Whyte in the neck. Peters at first, when followed by a constable, is stated to have cocked the revolver, but ultimately dropped it on the pavement with the remark that it had served its purpose. The victim of the tragedy is survived by a widow and four children. On the instruction of the Procurator-Fiscal of Hamilton, a post-mortem examination of the body of Mr Whyte has been made, and the expectation is that Peters, who is in custody in connection with the affair, will be charged with the capital offence.
There is a much longer report on the trial in the edition of 4th September – Peters was found guilty but insane at time.
