Poorhouse-Sheriffs order

Post by Jacquie » Sat Oct 07, 2006 8:07 pm

Hi,
Does anyone know why a wife would be sent to the poorhouse on Sheriff's order? It happened 3 times in the early 1900's. This info came from copies of the poor law records. There is a number after the "Poorhouse for wife on Sheriffs order", would this be a record of a case I could look up?
Also could they (those in charge of the poorhouse or other authorities)send one of the family to an orphanage. The eldest son was sent? or did his parents have to put him in?
Thanks for any help

Hi there

What was the location?, - if you are fortunate, there could be extant Poor Relief records, and, if you are particularly fortunate, extant records of the Poor Relief Inspector's interview of the applicant, which can give what is virtually a mini-life history ........

It's not clear just what Poor Relief records that you already have ........

Poorhouse records

Hi,
I got these Poor Law records from the Mitchell Library this summer.
From what I can gather the family was in and out of the Poorhouse all their lives. This particular one is an application made in 1904 Parish of Govan Combination, Application for Relief. There are 5 pages, the front is the application, the 2nd page is the Assistant Inspectors report, the 3rd and 4th is headed Patricks (I think that's supposed to be Partick) Reg No 102818. It's 2 columns 1st Dates, 2nd Change in Circumstance and Subsequent Proceedings.
Dates are from 1907 to 1929.
It looks like a list of what happened or what they did.
For example 1907 Dec 2 (Husb) Poorhouse,S95152 In with wife and 4 ch, 11.11.07
Absconded 16.12.07, Wife and 4 ch left 16.12.07.
This type of record repeats for the 2 pages with 1908 June 1 Poorhouse for wife on Sheriffs order S100613 wife in with 4 ch. 16/5/08 Cath born 29/5/08 Left with 5 ch 12/6/08.
Further on again a few more times is "in on sheriffs order" and on 15/7/09 Hugh to Smyllum.
I'm wondering for what reason they would be put in on sheriffs order, why Hugh would be sent to an orphanage and if sheriffs records are available.
Thanks for any help

Hi Jacquie

I've never come across a situation where someone ended up in the poorhouse as a result of a Sheriff's Order, - perhaps they appeared before him on a charge, and he cosidered the poorhouse was more appropriate than prison; or was a vagrant ..................

Worth an email to NAS to enquire if the relevant Sheriff Court records are extant ........
