Irvine Poorhouse records - Cluny Carson

Post by ninatoo » Wed Oct 18, 2006 2:24 am

Hi,

Can someone please have a look at poorhouse records for Irvine, Ayr?

At http://www.ayrshire-roots.co.uk I found an entry which states:

Carson Cluny 56 Irvine 258 2170789-2

I believe this to be my ancestor, and if he gave the correct age, this would have been in 1923. However, I am not certain of that, as there may have been an OLDER Cluny Carson that I do not know about yet.

I would love to have a copy of the record!

Thanks for reading,

Nina

Hi Nina

Telephone: 01563 554343

or the

Baird Institute History Centre & Museum
3 Lugar Street
Cumnock
KA18 1AD

Telephone & Fax: (01290) 421701
Email: baird.institute@east-ayrshire.gov.uk
Contact: Anne Geddes, Heritage Services Librarian

See http://www.east-ayrshire.gov.uk/comser/ ... e_Archives

And there is also;

I think the Dick Institute may be the one which holds the poorhouse records, but I'm not really up on Ayrshire sources, so I may be wrong! :?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Nina
If you send an E-mail to
localhistory@north-ayrshire.gov.uk
with the film no of the record taken from the data base, the local historian Jill McColl will be able to advise you she is based at Adrossan Library.
If they are not able to send a copy to you I could phone them up for you and arrange to collect it for you and send it on to you.
Regards Rita.

In this case, as far as I'm aware, it's not the Dick in Kilmarnock, but the library in Ardrossan, for which Rita has given details.

David

PS Looks like Rita hasn't reset her TS timezone to GMT, as I don't have a time travel machine :!:

Thanks for the replies. I have hadc contact with a person who obtained a poorhouse record for his own ancestor at a cost of about twenty pounds, which seems expensive. Are the Ayrshire poorhouse records not available to view at the Mitchell?

Hi David and Nina
Nina as the poor records in the Data Base you looked at are for Ayrshire they will not be at the Mitchell but I think theese ones will also be at the Dick Institute as Lesley said, but if you E-mail the address I gave, you will find Jill very helpful and mine didn't cost anything but as you stay in Australia they may ask for postage. (If they no longer send them out my offer still stands) I've never been to the Adrossan library but I have a cousin who stays there and as I see what could be another of my Rellos' in the Data Base I've been thinking of going sometime anyway.
David I thought the clock would change itsel
I haven't even changed my watch yet my reasoning for that was well I had to get up an hour earlier than usual this week and the first thing when wakening is I usually look at my watch and thought it would be a nice surprise to have an extra hour to rush about, but coming in to-night I was rushing about like a dafty preparing the dinner and an hour later wondered why nobody was in from work till I looked at the kitchen clock so another nice surprise and a quiet cup of coffee (daft a ken)

Thanks Rita,

I have written to that address and I am hopeful of a reply. I will let you know how I get on. Also thanks very much for the kind offer you made. It is things like that which make this board and the people on it the best on the net!

Thanks also Lesley, I will write to the addresses you supplied too if needed!

Hi Rita, Lesley, david, and others who read,

Today I received an email with the poorhouse record attached! Thanks for that email address Rita...what a terrific service they have!

I was in for a surprise...my Cluny had married, but seems to have split up from his wife according to the record, and was trying to raise funds to send money to her. I never knew, as he was single by the time he died in 1948. So I guess that's a lesson for me...never assume single means that the person never married at all.
