Haddington Lunatic Asylum

Post by Jockbird » Thu Oct 26, 2006 6:54 pm

Hello!

My Gx3 grandfather appears to be in the Haddington District Lunatic Asylum in 1891 - Joseph Henderson, age 43, occupation Groom, widower and born in Haddington.....all fits.

In 1901 he's aged 12 years in 10, still a widower, still in the asylum but has changed occupation to Labourer.

I'm wondering where I might find the records for this place?? :-k

I'm trying to find out where he died, according to his son's marriage cert in 1913 he's dead by then. I've looked at the obvious suspects but none of them are him and my credit card is on the verge of melting! The Edinburgh candidates are no good, I've done a margin of error of 5 years on his DOB of 1847 and I'm wondering if these records may tell me more.

I'm hoping to get this info as I've been asked by my dad's Cardiac Club (the nurses who look into their aftercare) to look into the cause of death of direct ancestors as there appears to be a very obvious history of heart disease in the family and this elusive Joseph is my missing link! Although it's my Glasgow/Lanark side that are riddled with it from when death records began in 1855.

I'm now going to get that reply telling me that all Edinburgh area stuff went up in a puff of smoke, amn't I?

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Donna

If anyone knows of records from there, I'm interested, as I've got a death of an inmate in 1875.

Hello Donna,

According to many posts in the forum I'm afraid that seems to have been the case quite literally. :(

Kind regards,

Edinburgh City, yes - those poor relief records are reported to have been incinerated, but East Lothian I'm not sure about.

It may be worth contacting the East Lothian Archive Service, based in Haddington. See the wepage (link below) for more information and a contact e-mail address.

Please let us know of the outcome.

All the best,

Brilliant,

Thank you David, Annette & Andrew for your replies, I'll drop the Archivist an email and let you know the outcome.

At the moment I've a 'lunatic' missing in action somewhere in the central belt between 1901 & 1913....I've got to find him to save my own sanity!

Hi all
Here's a wee bit about its position (though not the whereabouts of the records....yet!)
The Town Buildings, situated at the junction of High Street and Back Street, were erected in 1748 from a plan of William Adam, the celebrated architect. They were enlarged in 1830-31 by the addition of three cells, a spacious town hall, and an ornamental spire 150 feet high, from designs by Mr Gillespie Graham. They contain the town-council room, the assembly room, and the free town library. In Hardgate Street is situated Bothwell Castle, an old town house of the Earls of Bothwell. Near the town stands the County Lunatic Asylum, a handsome building opened in 1866.

On the other hand they may just be reports - y'know, how many patients to a room, how many toilets, that kinda stuff.
Best wishes

Wha kens, but it might also be that these LHSA records contain some more "meaty" info.

Further info eagerly awaited.
