Glasgow City Poorhouse lookup please?

Post by emanday » Fri Nov 17, 2006 8:06 pm

If anyone has the time while doing their own research, is their any chance of looking up my GG Grandfather please?

Been having a bit of a nightmare finding the relationships with this Crichton family, see topic

http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7005

Apparently James Crichton died age 77 in City Poorhouse, Glasgow on 27 March 1903. Four years later, his wife, Margaret Crichton m.s. Girtrig, died age 78 on 3 October 1907 in Stobhill Hospital.

I'd really like to know what the circumstances were that took James into the poorhouse and whether Margaret went there with him. Heavens, she might have still been there up to her death - doesn't bear thinking about :(

Five of their six children were possibly still around then, (well I know 3 were living for certain and another two haven't revealed their DC's yet).

Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi Mary and Joette,
There is a 1901 application for James CRICHTON (76), born Ayr. (D-HEW 16/3/4/1. p.961.)
The wrong book was brought up for me, and i was unable to stay on any longer for the correct one.
But hopefully i'll be able to drop in and say "hello" to yourself Joette on Monday afternoon...is that ok?
And i could get details then.

If it is him, and it sounds very much like it, that means he was there for a while before he died! My James was certainly born in Ayr in 1825, so the age for the application matches.

Thank you for having a look for me, Jack. Pity about the wrong book coming up, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. That's two, possibly three of my ancestors ending up in the poorhouse, (if his wife Margaret went there with him). It's very humbling to realise the trials and tribulations our ancestors suffered.

Hi Annette,
I'd the feeling that you were going to look - that's why i thought i'd better mention them before Saturday!
I know your Mitchell visits are rather limited making your time there very precious.
But i'm very fortunate in that mine isn't usually so.

Hi Mary,
I'll need to get back to you.
The record is over 3 pages and written in different hands and inks etc.
That makes for some reading difficulties at the present.
Although a person dies in the Poorhouse in a certain year,
their first application can be, at times, even many years previous.

Mary

At some point, as it can be very useful for others to see the type of details that these records contain, it would be most useful to be able to see at least a partial transcript or maybe summary of the info contained.

For example, in this case, there is likely to be detailed info on the 3 to 5 children, including occupation, earnings, address, wife, wains (even sometimes their occupations and earnings in turn). All this so that the poor relief inspector (and his superiors if necessary) could judge the extent to which family members could provide support to the parents.

Sorry that I didn't get the lookup done but so glad that Jack was able to help.
It was very nice to meet Jack & David W.It was a surprise to meet both as I had not read Jack's message & events over the weekend cleared much from my head.
It was great meeting the Senior Archivist & hearing her interpretation of the Records-she cleared up a few questions & I was also able to read a few interesting snippetts from the books.

Your offer was much appreciated, nonetheless, Joette.

Your visit must have been fascinating. I so much look forward to getting up there myself, but still can't sort out any travel plans till my offspring get their holidays booked and I know what slots I can fit into!

Yeah! Mum's the cat and house watcher
