John Donald

Post by Jean Jeanie » Sun Jan 14, 2007 3:14 pm

Hi All

I'm trying to help a relative find the death of his ggg grandfather John Donald.

The info I have is the following. He is aged 55 in the 1871 census living in Renton Dunbartonshire, with his wife and family.(Born Milton Dunbartonshire)

According to his son's m.c. in 1872 he is not deceased.

His wife, Elizabeth m.s. McIntyre died 14/7/1878. Her d.c. states married to John Donald, indicating that he was still alive at that time. However she died in Dunbarton Combination Poorhouse and the informant to her death is the governor of the Poorhouse. So where was John Donald when his wife died?

I cannot find him in the 1881 census, indicating that he died between 1878 and 1881.

So far so good.

However doing a search for his death between 1878 and 1881 on SP gives no hits for Dunbartonshire.

Does anyone know which parish Milton is in? Is it near the boundary of another county? If so I may have to widen the search area.

How reliable was the governor of the poorhouse in stating that His wife was married at the time of her death? Do I need to widen the search years?

All advice gratefully accepted.

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Jean,

I will have a look for Elizabeth's poorhouse application at The Mitchell this week sometime. If it is indexed hopefully it will help.

Kind regards,
Annette M

I should have enough for a search - was Elizabeth born in Milton too?

Death of John Donald

Post by nelmit » Mon Jan 22, 2007 3:37 pm

Hello Jean,

Got to The Mitchell this morning and found an application for Elizabeth. Hopefully information will help - I've trimmed it a bit to save repetition but all main facts are there.

February 16th 1869
John Donalds wife Elizabeth Mcintyre
Stewart St, Cowcaddens

Age 52 -Born Main Street, Renton.
Reason - Deserted & children

The applicant applied being deserted by her husband.
Daughter of George Mcintyre and Elizabeth Lyndsay both dead.
Husband John Donald age 52 born Gartshaik in the parish of Old Kilpatrick. Son of Robert Donald and Agnes Ritchie.

Children
Elizabeth 28 single? living abroad
John 26 a soldier
Agnes 27 m. to a slater
Marjory 25 b. Paisley, single, in mills
Alex. 18 b. Busby a blacksmith
Ann 16 b. Paisley in mill ? work
Catherine 13y 6m b. Paisley, a servant
Helen 11y 6 m b. Paisley, a servant
Malcolm 10 b. Paisley

Previous addresses were
63 & 70 Stewart Street amounting to about 4 years.
Bonhill for over 2 years and before that Paisley for 14.

They wrote to her sister, wife of Mr McDougall, a tailor for proof of birth.

She was admitted to Dumbarton Poorhouse on 22nd October 1869.

I couldn't find any applications for John but a quick search on SP for a death in Old Kilpatrick of John Donald born 1817 between 1869 and 1881 gives 1 hit.

I'll keep my fingers crossed it's him.

Hope this helps,
Annette M

John Donald and his wife Elizabeth McIntyre

Post by Dusty44 » Tue Jan 23, 2007 12:05 am

Just want to say many thanks to Jean and Annette for supplying all this information on John and Elizabeth and their families. They were my grt grt grandparents, and answered my question on why Elizabeth was in the Poorhouse. I had not been able to locate John's death certificate, but will keep an eye on the forum to see if it is him that has been located at Scotlands People.

Graeme and I have just recently been in contact with each other regarding our common ancestors.

Hi Annette,

That's great. Thanks very much to yourself and Jean for all of your help. I never realised that John Donald and his family had lived in Cowcaddens, but I noticed that Stewart Street is still there. I'll need to have a look to see if the houses are still on that street the next time I'm through at Glasgow.
I see the admission date for Elizabeth into the poorhouse is 1869. I've got a copy of the 1871 census where John and Elizabeth are living together with six of their children at 32 Thimble Street in Renton, so I'm not sure what has happened there. Could it be the case that she was receiving poor relief from 1869 but never became an inmate until after 1871, or that she spent time there before living with John again about 1871 and then moving back into the poorhouse?
I'll look into the John Donald you found on SP. I think I may have checked this before though and found that the parents were William Donald and Agnes Paterson. I'll give you a shout back to keep you updated.

Thanks again,

Graeme.
